Last nights broadcast of the BBC Proms was terrific. It featured the music of Charles Mingus. So a lot of young jazz players augmented the chamber ensemble.

I was surprised to see the intro to 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' played on a Gretch hollowbody.

Wish I'd known.

Ralph Towner does a lovely version on 12-string:

Hadnt heard the Towner piece. Thank you :)

The first inroad to Mingus for me was through Davy Graham

That album is very eclectic. With his own take on Morrocan music, Jazz from Arr Blakey (Moanin) and Mingus. Trad folk and blues tunes and early Dylan.

Black Is The Colour Of My True Love's Hair
Rock Me Baby
Seven Gypsies
Ballad Of The Sad Young Men
Moanin'
Skillet (Good 'N Greasy)
Ain't Nobody's Business What I Do
Maajun (A Taste Of Tangier)
I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes
Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
My Babe
Goin' Down Slow

Yeah the same guy that got the tickets for the Glass/Shankar concert went to this Prom aswell...

It should all be on Iplayer John if you wanna see it. Its shown on BBC 4 Friday nights (at 9 I think).

Thanks for posting, I must watch these at some point along with the Glass/ Shankar stuff Rabs mentioned.

Regarding Mingus, if you haven't heard The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady you must. I would say it's in my top 5 favourite jazz records of all time (if not the finest). Absolutely incredible album, though I do love many of his others.
