Tom,

Within your collection of Martins I noticed a sunburst dread.

What model is that??

Can you post a more detailed photo of that beauty?

Thanks

JC

Hi JC,

That is a 1935 D-18 that was "restored" at George Gruhn's shop in the late 1970s. I got it some years ago from a rock star in England. At some point someone had put a pickup inside and tone knobs on the top. Gruhn patched the two holes and refinished the whole guitar -- it was always a shadetop, but the refin was by modern standards IMO marginal at best.

The inside, top, bridge, etc. is all original and like most of these old guys, it has tone to die for.

I don't normally share this level of information, but you seem like a cool guy.

OOPS, I forgot the pictures. Apparently Martin made a few of these "black" bursts guitars in early 1935. There were very few made -- I have only seen one D-28 and have been told of one other. I always knew this guitar was refinished because Gruhn said so, but since I did not know that this one would have "black" burst because it was made in April 1935, I thought the burst was way off, Well it is not perfect but apparently much closer to the original than I thought.

This sunburst was very similar to what Gibson was doing in 1935.
