Limited edition

Hi Guys, does anyone knows how many of this limited edition J45's are made?

custom, granadillo, bilwara, vintage,...

Someone told me once it was between 50 and 150 from each model. Is it so?

Thnks!

Short answer - 'yes'.

Long answer - there have been in recent memory - over 50 'versions' of the J45. One could argue any that are not the 'standard' are 'limited edition' or 'custom'. Some are made for Gibson's Five Star Dealers - based on their specs. Usually in batches of 50. The size isn't widely publicized. The run might be repeated later. Or repeated with small changes. I would guess the overall objective of this "Limited Edition"concept is not to create rare, collectible examples of the J45, but to sell more guitars, based the nearly infinite range of possible variations - by pushing the right buttons for as many possible customers as they can.

So - if you are very interested in a particular J45, it really doesn't matter whether it's a standard model, or a different version produced in large numbers or 'limited' numbers - if you like it - go for it, regardless of how many others like it might be out there worldwide.

Amen Brother. Gibson's marketing team never sleeps. Gibson LEs rarely hold their value any better than any other J-45. As far as I can recall, about the only recent Gibson LE that quickly soared in value were those first McCartney Texans which today are going for more than twice what they originally sold for. If only I had a crystal ball.

I have never heard of those woods. I wonder if Gibson is testing the waters to see how folks take to guitars made of alternative lumber.

But if you like the guitar because of the way it sounds, feels or looks, then go for it and do not look back.

Em7-add my Custom Shop 1964 J-45 Reissue.

Okay, Jeff - wonder if it's the same as this one, which says 1963 -

http://www.ebay.com/...gkAAOSwb3NZuRf0

But here are a few more -

56. Gibson J-45 with unique Granadillo tonewood

57. Gibson J-45 1963 reissue (cherryburst but normal bridge/saddle)

58. Gibson J-45 ''The 59'' (Custom Shop) triburst w. adj. bridge/saddle

And let's not forget it was Wily who started this list - I'm only the stand-in-moderator.

The cherry burst looks the same, but my CS 1964 J-45 Reissue has an adjustable bridge.

Mine seems to be like the 1965 Donovan J-45 Reissue, from what I can tell, except mine has no electronics in it like the Donovan model does.

I bought mine new from Fuller Guitars.

At the time there was also a 1960s icon J-45 that was a proprietary model at Musicians Friend. I asked Jeremy Fuller if my CS 1964 J-45 Reissue was the same as the 1960's icon J-45 and he told me it was similar, except the version Fullers was selling had thinner bracing like the original 60s J-45s, plus the CS 1964 J-45 Reissue had a nitro finish that had a different treatment on it that was more similar to the original than the 1960s icon J-45 model that Musicians Friend was selling.

Fuller's does custom Gibson runs to their own specs, often fine-tuning specifications to more accurately reflect the period the guitar represents, compared to "stock" versions. My 2006 Fuller's '43 SJ re-issue, for example, has a slot-through belly-down bridge, 5-ply top binding, dark centerline back stripe, 19-fret neck, serial number ink-stamped on neck block, firestripe guard, etc. The two "non-period" characteristics are bound fretboard (post-war), and the Luthier's Choice (wide modern) neck profile.

They do a nice job.

I think mine was just called a "Rosewood", but it was ebony board and bridge.

:-k

I remember when you got that one - it was my first realization that there were 'variations' on the standard J45 model. I was saving my nickels and dimes to get one - I was really lusting after the addition of the ebony, but they stopped making them long before I had gotten my Guitar Fund up to snuff.

Didn't that Goober actor that stars in the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean movies get a J45 custom built with skulls and crossbones and pirate ships all over it? i think it had abalone Seagull shyte too. Johnny Depp/Edward Scissor Hands/Captain Jack Sparrow... 'Better Living Through Chemistry". Maybe he inspired that Gibson Sparrow model that lasted one year.

The Pirate Guitar may be what caused Bozeman to realize they needed to stop making one-off customs and only do Custom LTE Runs for their 5Star Dealers.

  • 3 years later...

Just purchased the j45 125 anniversary edition, love it and will sit well with the SJ200 and Hunmingbird.

had originally ordered from guitar guitar (UK) only to find there was some poor craftsmanship on the head stock and also the truss rod cover did not say ‘limited’ as it should.

Wasnt convinced by the excuse the salesman made when I questioned him why it was missing. Bought one from elsewhere.

question. Has anyone seen this before ?

thanks

Do they use the William S. Burroughs cut up method of picking names?

Eeeh, don't think so - and can't really see reasons for wondering. Can you explain. Aren't the most pretty straight. .

I think they just took a lot of slips of paper with all those buzz word names written on them, and threw them in the air, and picked them up, and whatever slips of paper they picked up became that J-45 name.

O yes, I know the technique, but can't see the connection. Could you name a few  - Koa Elite, Ebony Lyric ?

Refer to the list of 54 - J-45's and there you go. Mello Yello may be my favorite. Who doesn't like a nice refreshing  soda (called pop in some parts of the USA) when playing guitar.

Are the run of neon green ones on the list.

The Mellow Yellow refers to the fist attempt to launch a Donovan-model. It's a rare release.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          You may recall his big (and quite controversial) hit with that title. Besides the burst was rather, , , yellow.

I've heard Donovan's music. I don't live under a rock. They call me mellow yellow (Quite rightly)
