Dredd38
I purchased this guitar from a reputable dealer and am confused regarding the serial numbers. It was labelled as a 2010 Gibson Les Paul. It however appears to be a 120th anniversary guitar as it has the inlay on the 12th fret stating that. From what I know (and this isn't a lot) this was therefore made in 2014 but the serial number 140008486 seems to suggest it was made in 2010 using the 1st and 5th digit. When I check online I get two matches one states that it was made in 2010 the other in 2014 so I am confused. Rather than trust the internet I thought I would ask someone that knows. Thanks for your help.
sparquelito
Hmmmm...... The Guitar Dater Project confirms 2010, strictly by that serial number. "Your guitar was made at the Nashville Plant, TN, USA on February 4th, 2010 Production Number: 186" This other guitar, clearly made in 2014 though, has a similar serial number. "140048357" https://reverb.com/item/1595730-gibson-les-paul-junior-2014-120th-anniversary-inlay-sunburst-satin-used I'm guessing that yours is a straight-up 2014 model, and the serial numbering protocol is just a bit jacked up. OR, your neck was originally produced in 2010, but never finished, inlayed, and mounted in a complete guitar until 2014. I would call Gibson Customer Support and ask them. Johnny 6 String
Hi Dredd; In 2014 Gibson ceased using the 1st and 5th format (ydddynnn) and starting using 1st and 2nd for the year (yynnnnnnnn), so you guitar is indeed a 2014. Dredd38
Just found the below on the Gibson site that I had somehow missed before. I am guessing that this explains it as I know it is 2014 due to the 120th anniversary insert on the 12th fret. The change in serial numbers from 2014 onwards shows this is a 2014 guitar. The Guitar Dater Project must be picking up on the first 8 numbers as if you leave the 6 off the end the check comes back as a 2010 guitar only. Thanks for your help. Gibson USA 2014 to present – These serial numbers cannot be dated to a specific day of the year. The new model year typically launches in the fall as the current model year winds down. It is not uncommon for a new model year model to be produced during the previous model year (example – a 2015 model may have been built in late 2014). The pattern is as follows: YYRRRRRRR YY is the model year RRRRRRR is the number in product for the model year (starts at 0000001)
