lolo_guitar
hi i have a sg special with 490r 498t the sounds when i play unplugged are just amazing ! bright , loud it's almost an acoustic guitar and i have never found a guitar like that : Charvel, ibanez, ESP, Fender : no ! Gibson was the best but ESP in 2d when i wanted an updated version, i thought about the new HP series with the SG and the new models but are you satisfied with 2 classic 57 ? (57 and 57+) with alnico 2 mine is a 498t with alnico 5 so, i waited for more and not with "less"
charlie brown
I/We can't answer to what YOU will like/prefer. Only you can do that. All my SG's have 57's, except the 2018 SG Jr. It has a "Dog Ear" P-90. Both kinds of pickups, do everything I want/need them to do, for the music I love to play. Your preferences, may vary. So, go out, play as many as you can, through the same model amp, and stomp boxes, that you use. That should give you a good idea, which year, model, and pickup you prefer. Cheers, CB
lolo_guitar
my question was more about the pickups outpout dc resistance brightness harmonics-sustain Considering a 498t is used to be superior than the hot PAF like the bb pro and classic 57 which is just made with alnico 2 that was my question : is it enough to play with alnico 2 and not 5 ?for the brightness i am not sure someone may have a lot of SG to have an opinion
gearhead
I have an Epi SG that I installed a set of 490R-498T in, and I LOVE it! Cuts through the mix very well. I've had other SG's with Gibson "T" Tops and I didn't care for the sound. I play hard rock/metal, and this is the only way to go in a solid mahogany body guitar, especially an SG, at least as far as I'm concerned. Revolution Six
Difficult to answer, 490R / 498T is a fantastic set, Blues, funk on the 498T, metal, they are very good. '57 Classic are great too, less agressive imho, more rounded sound.
lolo_guitar
i just said that my sg had different pickups and a 498t with alnico 5 for the bridge position nowadays, the sg have alnico 2 (so we can imagine that they have less brightness and less power for the classic 57+ vs 498t) that's why i wondered if it was enough for the price which is not low to buy the new models
Guest Farnsbarns
I would have said the 57s are brighter myself.

Gibson was the best but ESP in 2d I' ve got 2 SGs like this , very resonant guitars : a 2000 SG Standard and a 2015 SG Standard, awesome vibrations ! I know what you are talking about. If you want that incredible feeling play the Gibson first.
glp2012
the sounds when i play unplugged are just amazing ! bright , loud it's almost an acoustic guitar Your original statement is that the guitar sounds great "unplugged." To me, it sounds like the acoustic qualities of the guitar are more important that the pickups you are rockin'...forget the pickups and get a guitar that sound great "unplugged."
