It's an 8 year old Elitist, with an added Bibsby. The only "burst" guitar I own, but just such an icon I would've felt guilty doing anything else! And yeah, I like it a lot. I've tried other shims, but his worked the best for me. The covers are a different story. There's a reason why Lollar and other pickup guys won't rewind metal covered Epi pickups. You can work on getting the metal covers off (desoldering), but then you have the issues of pole spacing and pickup height matching, on the plastic covers. There are plenty of aftermarket covers, but I went through a few and didn't find a perfect match. I ended up just changing the pickups out. I went with Lollars, but still ran into the same problem, neck and bridge pickups had different pole spacings and the height from the mounting bracket to the top of the bobbins were different. I ended up buying different height blank covers and drilling my own pole holes. It's actually pretty easy, using the stock metal covers as templates. Did a tutorial here several years ago about it. I think Epi would have switched to plastic covers if they sounded better... but their is that Beatles marketing thing, theirs were chrome in the 60's, so I am not sure... I am coming to the conclusion that the variance in P90 pickups is all pretty close and that it's more about the physics of the guitar, the strings, the amp, and the PL|A|Y|ER. When I first swapped out from the metal Epis, I went to a set of Biltofts (cream covers), then changed them to black. I wasn't so sure that the money spent was worth the price and that maybe I should have spent more time playing with pickup height. That changed when I found the used pair of Lollars. The Biltofts went to the Zephyr Blues Deluxe (a much better platform for those) and don't regret spending on the upgrade, whole new guitar. My advice, leave it alone and play with the adjustments and upgrade the nut. Unless of course you can afford a good set on P-90s. Same guitar.....
