goldtop2
Whats the best "home made" mixture for cleaning the guitar? Links? Also has any other members here got a good homegrown recipe for string cleaner to extend string life? I guess I could buy the cleaning products on the market too. Any good cleaner? glp2012
I don't...I'm in the same camp as James Jamerson - "The funk is in the gunk." Words to play by...
Eracer_Team
Depends what the guitar is made of Nitro vs Polly On my Nitro finished Les Paul I use naphtha. Long accepted cleaning product. Strings... play em till the break or replace them.. Don't put chemicals on them

MrNylon
Getting Gibson's cleaning products is a safe call. I use the Gibson pump spray cleaner on my SG Std. Basses. A good safe cleaner for Gibson Nitro finishes.

Twang Gang
Don't have any homemade recipes for cleaners. I use Virtuoso cleaner and then the polish. It's a little on the expensive side perhaps, but it goes a long way. I bought a 4 oz. bottle of each over 4 years ago and they are still about half full. Safe for Nitro finishes. goldtop2
I use the Gibson pump spray cleaner on my SG Std. Basses. A good safe cleaner for Gibson Nitro finishes. Spray it right on? Could it damage the electronic pickups? You spray it on the cloth first?
Eracer_Team
caveat: smokers be cautious If you were a smoker.. then it would be almost utterly pointless to clean the guitar then as the yellowing nicotine (besides the smell) would coat the guitar within minutes of lighting up your first.. so cleaning is pointless to a smoker. MrNylon
Spray it right on? Could it damage the electronic pickups? You spray it on the cloth first? Always on a cloth first.
MrNylon
I usually spay it onto an area on the back away from the control panel, then use what's left on the cloth to clean the front. There is in most cases enough to do the front. if not, spray a bit more on the cloth.
MrNylon
Also, wipe the back of the neck also before wiping down the front of the body.

Jeffytune
When I worked at Fender, in final assembly we polished all of our guitars with Johnson's liquid floor wax.....really we did, probably still do. This is what I use.... Totaly safe for all painted surface's and gives a deep shine.
kidblast
for cleaning if you're just looking for something easy and mild, some soapy water in a bowl with a cotton rag dampened in the solution should not be a problem for anything. just not TOO wet, dampen only. for strings cleaning, take a small cotton rag and dampen on corner with rubbing alcohol pinch the strings with the tip of your fingers, then just slide it back and forth. Just try not to make it TOO wet with the rubbing alcohol. Just a bit dampness.. all ya need. you'll see the black gunk lift right off.
