p90

1) Are Gibson dog ear p90 pickups all the same?

2) Are there variations in p90 pickups?.

3) I have a Melody maker that sounds very thin compared to a sg I used to have.

1) Do you mean as produced today, or from the beginning of production?

From the 1940 to now, no, in today's models, yes.

2) From Gibson, or do you mean all the other manufactures and the aftermarket too?

3) Have you checked the pickup height?

That makes a huge difference.

Are the strings new?

The same brand and gauge?

That will make a difference as well.

No..not all P-90's are the same...I have 3 Gibson P-90's and they all have their own voice..........wiring configurations, pickup magnets, pots, strings to a certain degree all come into play to effect tone.........( tone before it hits the amp of course)

Seeking more opinions on this subject... it was my understanding that they are all the same except for some "Hot" version in the 80's. Isn't the variance folks notice more about the guitar its mounted in???

They are not all the same.

Even if in the same guitar.

I have two Gibson Les Pauls with P90's. One is a hand wired 2018 Classic, no weight relief, 11 pounds. Other is a 2017 Tribute, printed circuit board, 9 hole weight relief, 9 pounds.

They sound VERY similar. Pickup height seems to make a huge difference with each of them and their sound. I have the same strings on each, same rosewood fretboard, Classic has nitro finish, Tribute has satin. Classic has bigger neck, Tribute has slim taper neck. I'd be hard pressed to tell them apart by sound alone.
