Vintage E230TD Pickup Selector question

Hello all...I need some expert help. So I picked up a new (to me) 1967 Casino E230TD and I'm falling in love. I've checked it out closely and I've verified original caps...pots dates and such...and I'm feeling like a lucky guy to own this vintage gem. I am a bit confused, however, at the response that I am getting when running in the middle pickup switch position. All the electronics are seemingly original and I can see no signs of mods. When in middle pickup switch position I surely get a blend between the neck and bridge pups, however, when I have the volume off for one of either of the pups...I get no volume at all. Is this the normal configuration? In other words...when in middle switch position running both pups....I must have some amount of volume up at both pups to get any sound through the amp....If I have neck at 10 and bridge at 0...I get no sound. If I have the neck at 0 and the bridge at 10 I get no sound. If I have both volumes above 0....I get sound.

The guitar sounds shockingly good. I lucked into acquiring it and hadn't been shopping such a model....so I don't have much experience or knowledge relating to the controls on this model. Your help is appreciated.

This is a normal function of typical 50's wiring, as soon as one volume is at zero no sound. The fix is simple enough, although complicated by your hollow body. You just need to flip the two wires at each volume pot (the two legs) and you will be able to blend the two at any level between 0-10 on either volume and still have sound. Trick for you is fishing them out.

Great!...thank you very much. No...I have no need to modify the wiring...I am fine the way that it is. I was simply unsure as to whether this was normal working behavior...and you have verified this for me. I had more than enough trouble just flipping the pots over through the F-hole to verify their manufacture date. Thanks again!

You're very welcome, happy to provide peace of mind. Yeah, pulling the wiring out of a hollow body can be a trying experience at best. If you did decide to tough it out, one trick is to use lengths of tubing (like aquarium tubing) to fish the pots in and out. The tubing fits snug over the shaft, makes the re-install much simpler.

That is brilliant. I never did figure out whether i could actually get a volume or tone pot completely out through the f-hole....if at all it would have been precarious. I just needed to flip the pot over to read the date code and was able to do that on one of them (the other code was blocked by solder and wires). It reminded me of that game we played as kids in the 1970's called "Operation". When I change the strings...I need to check the pups...though I am certain that they are also original as it sounds brilliant. Thanks again.

Kitarkus - See my response to your post about this guitar over on the LTG forum.

For a lot of folks, an original Kalamazoo-made Casino like yours would be considered the holy grail.

This is one you should really consider keeping!
