The Great Buckeye Convergence

Cabarone

Recommended Posts

Zombywoof and I finally got together to deliver that '61 B45. It was a greater union than when Randy "Macho Man" Savage and Hulk Hogan teamed up. We had a great time, couldn't tell each other apart, and food and additional guitar purchases were involved...our wives were witnesses and involved in the shenanigans as well...

He's a great guy...real cool, and, best of all, he really likes the guitar...ding ding ding!!!

I hope someday we can all get back together...

'woof, y'all ever get this way come on in...

Picture works fine.

You guys crack me up! You look like Arlo's brothers.

Hmmmm, two long-haired hippies meeting in a parking lot to do a deal.....

Somebody better call the cops!

The guitar looks great, but that's a pretty funky sunburst.

It truly was a good day. The sun was shining and for a change no snow or rain. Meeting Cabarone and his wife was a treat. Two of the nicest folks you could ever hope to run into.

We actually did the hand off in a music store parking lot. I should, however, have never have left my wife alone in the place. When I went out she was playing a Taylor 12 string. When I walked back in she was purchasing an Epiphone Broadway.

Now the Gibson. I am one of those that feels it is important to give some thought to the first song you are going to play on a new guitar. For whatever reason, it is important to me. Like it is going to set the stage for all that comes after. I decided for this Gibson it was going to be Blind Willie McTell's "Searching the Desert for the Blues." Based on what I heard and felt, to steal a line from one of my favorite movies, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

... just wondering / anticipating - how'd the first song go? In an effort to educate myself, here's a youtube link I found of the original, very cool stuff! If you ever get a hankerin' would love to hear your version on your new guitar ; )

Yeah, that darker edge burst is a bit funky looking. But I have seen a few 1961 and 1962 J-45s with this same burst. Generally though the cherry burst shading is lighter and transition more blended. I have also seen '61s with different rosettes. This guitar has the three ply b/w rosette and top binding. The tailpiece is a repro.

My first thoughts are that this slope shoulder version does have more low end than my '63 B45-12 had but is not as loud when played with fingers sans picks.

Both of those strike me as right. Sometimes, the plies are different widths, with one narrow white, one narrow black, and one wider white. I haven't found a source for replacement binding and rosette with that exact configuration. The J-45 TV posted in the Holter pickguard thread here earlier this week also had that same binding and rosette, so the material is out there somewhere. If anyone knows a source, I'd be grateful.

Went OK. I had not played that one in quite a while so started off a bit slow picking it up as I went along. But I always liked it and while it is not a terribly difficult tune to play, Blind Willie threw pretty much every trick he knew into it. After that I went into Leadbelly's "John Hardy" to see if I could summon up some thunder.
