Hotel California

I've been working on this particular recording since before Christmas. I've got all the guitar tracks done. I'm waiting for my son to lay down his bass part (the current one is canned). I made videos for the double neck EDS-1275, the Taylor 12 and the Gibson SJ200 parts but never shot the lead and dual guitar parts I recorded with my son's Gibson SG. Once I have those videos and the bass track, I'll re-edit the piece and upload the full-length version.

For now, I faded it out at the beginning of the solos. BTW, I'm an acoustic guitar guy and my lead guitar playing sucks. Regardless, it was a fun challenge to play the leads in this piece (1000 takes in bits and pieces). I love the beginning more than the end of the song anyway. The intro, with that blend of the electric and acoustic 12 strings (with a funky rotating phaser effect), is very cool. I also love the acoustic six-string guitar part lead at the start. So many guitars and guitar parts and each verse and chorus slightly different! There are six string acoustics open and at capo 2, and an acoustic 12 string at capo 7. Loads of fun!

I borrowed the EDS-1275 from my guitar shop for the recording. They must love me to loan me a brand new $7600 guitar for a weekend!

I know this song triggers a lot of people to change radio stations when it comes on. So don't listen ;) . I happen to love the song (and the challenge).

Great job !

I for one ... never tire of the song [it's a masterpiece]

For me it is never about playing the song pefect or in perfect time ... it's about having fun and a giggle .

I like what you did ...Thanks for sharing

That is super! It has got to be the most serious production piece I have heard (and seen, in your case) on this forum.

Lars

Thanks, Lars! Yes, it is! With SO many guitar parts, I've been working on it for months. I have my son learning the bass part and will have to film him playing some of it. Plus, I have already done the lead guitar solo (badly) but never filmed it. So I will have to try to reproduce the part (learn it over again) for the video.

The next video version will come out around September I think! LOL

BTW, this is how involved this song is! 28 tracks so far.

So is the ESD-1275 now considered a used guitar since it went out of the store?

No. Long & McQuade will allow some customers to give an instrument a try for 24 hrs but still mark them new and full price, even though they have been out of the store. It is the same with guitars on the wall that have been out of the box and played many times in the store. They are still new. If a customer complains that there is a fingerprint on the neck or that there are pick marks on the protective film over the pickguard (this happens), L&M will gladly order a new one, in a box. It will take a few weeks of course. So if anyone baulks that the guitar has been played and wants a discount, L&M will cheerfully decline and offer to order a new-in-box instrument instead.

That being said, don't think you can walk into your local L&M and borrow an ESD-1275 for the weekend. It won't happen. [biggrin]

I find it amazing and intriguing when you delve into doing a cover of a song... any song. As I said above, I've been working on a cover of Hotel California for months now, working through all the many guitar parts and learning the bass riffs. I just stumbled on this YouTube video of this young music theory specialist, Adam Neeley doing a walkthrough of the music theory behind the song. Now I am FAR from a music theory buff. I have to count up and down the notes on my fingers to figure out what my chords are when using a capo! But I find this kind of stuff fascinating! It is like listening to someone speak French.. I get the jist of things and the odd word or phrase here and there but the whole thing is just music to my ears.

Give a listen (and watch his cool drawings as he goes):

(if you are sick of Hotel California by now, give it a pass!)
