Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade from my Epiphone SG to a used Gibson lp Standard. I wanted to make sure that this one is indeed a genuine Gibson and not a fake. No red flags stuck out to me but I wanted to get a second opinion before a make the purchase. Thanks in advance -Parker

I'm not as savvy at spotting fakes as others, but nothing jumps out at me as being overtly off. What are your concerns? The pictures at least on my computer are pretty small so I can't really see much detail.

nothing major was jumping out to me. the one thing i was a bit worried about was the serial number on the back. just doesn't look quite right to me.

That's the only thing I wondered about. It looks like a relatively new guitar and I think most of those are stamped into the headstock. maybe it's just a bad pic but I don't see anything there at all?

The serial number is there, but it looks like it is mostly hidden by the glare in the photo. I was able to enlarge the pic on my iPad. While I can't make out the entire number, it appears to start with 17 indicating a model year of 2017.

It sure is pretty, and it's a colour and style of top that is normally not counterfeited, but I would want (if I were a long-distance buyer) better pictures of that serial number.

It doesn't appear to be very deeply stamped into the wood, and the paint over the top appears to be all but obliterating the detail of the digits.

THAT IS THE ONLY THING THAT CONCERNS ME, Sparky said in all caps.

I seen that serial number issue many times. They stamp it into the wood and paint over it an if often appears like that, the bad pic doesn't help either. I wouldn't worry about it.

My LP has that issue as well. I can barely make it out.

You could NOT make out the serial no. of my 2014 V. I wouldn't worry about that.

No idea what burst that is, but you can easily check that up.

No red flags here.

IF YOU really want to know, CALL GIBSON @ 1 800 4 GIBSON and tell the person that answer's the phone what the serial# on the back of the Headstock is. That person will then tell you what the corresponding Guitar that was stamped with that number is, EXACTLY ! If the the Guitar you are told by GIBSON's phone rep is NOT EXACTLY what you are planning on buying, THEN ITS A FAKE !!!

It is pretty simple, GIBSON has taken real good care of the serial#'s since the Mid 1970's and can tell you in a heartbeat what guitar you should be looking at just be telling them the serial# !!!

GOOD LUCK !!! BTW, I'm NOT saying that is an AGILE or a CHIBSON, but I've seen caps like that on Agile's so do not let the 'Figuring ' get you, SERIAL #'s do not lie !!!!

Well actually every CHIBSON has a fake serial number. Copying the number scheme would be fairly easy to do. A fake can have a use a legitimate serial number...

As far as the pics allow to judge, she looks real to me.

The embossed serial numbers on my Gibsons are clearly legible under clear coats, but some of those under solid satin coats are quite hard to read. Solid colors with a clear coat like on the guitar in question can make them very hard to decipher.

Finally, all of them can be quite hard to photograph to my experience. Sometimes it took me dozens of attempts using lots of lighting and viewing angles.

Very true, this is why some sellers will blank out nor provide the serial number. However, (I hope this coma meets Pips standards) the serial number can tell you if its the actual guitar that is being sold. For example, the seller claims its an R9 but the serial number comes back as a LP Standard.
