Gibson Explorer copy or ???

Recommended Posts

Got this guitar a few weeks ago. It came in an original Gibson USA explorer case. The guitar and case appear to be possibly 20 to 30 years old.

- all mahogany body and set neck with lacquer finish

- r/w fretboard with 22 frets

- real MOP fret markers and real MOP Gibson "G" inlay in headstock

- slim "U" profiled neck, only way I can describe it

- fretboard radius is about 9.5 to 7.25 back to 9.5, using my radius gauges

- gold hardware, no markings on tuners

- CTS pots and decent wiring

- Seymour Duncan pickups, possibly from the 80's? See pics.

The only markings on the guitar is the Gibson-styled "G" on the headstock.

Some dimensions:

- 1.5 inch body thickness

- 1.55 inch neck width at 1st fret

- 1.96 inch neck width at 12th fret

- .779 inch neck thickness at 1st fret

- .824 inch neck thickness at 1st fret

The pickups:

neck: 59B

- no logo

- SH-1b

- '59 Model, bridge

bridge:

- DD-M

- SH-6b

- Duncan Distortion, bridge

It plays well and the pickups sound pretty good to my ears. Stays in tune. Looks great, lot of little playing marks, dings, a chip or two.

One issue though, the truss rod cover does not lay flat and flush to the headstock because the end of the truss rod sticks up a bit. So the truss rod cover is curved. See pics.

Chances are that this is a pretty well made copy that some luthier did back in the day. But, if you have any other info to offer or ideas or questions, please feel free to post.
