Looking to replace Casio with Gibson P90 pickups

Hi,

I already own a Gibson Les Paul and a Gibson Hummingbird.

I am now looking to get an Epiphone Casino like the one John Lennon used.

I don't really need the John Lennon edition, I am just looking to replace the Epiphone Casio pickups with the Gibson P90's.

Does anyone know if the Gibson P-94T and Gibson P-94R are the correct replacement pickups?

Here is a link to the specs to the products available to me as I am currently in Europe...

https://www.thomann.de/gb/gibson_p94_t_blackchrome.htm?ref=intl&shp=eyJjb3VudHJ5IjoiZ2IiLCJjdXJyZW5jeSI6IjIiLCJsYW5ndWFnZSI6ImVuIn0%3D

https://www.thomann.de/gb/gibson_p94_r_blackchrome.htm?ref=intl&shp=eyJjb3VudHJ5IjoiZ2IiLCJjdXJyZW5jeSI6IjIiLCJsYW5ndWFnZSI6ImVuIn0%3D

If not, does anyone know where I can (online) order the correct pickups that ship to Europe?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanking you in advance.

NO! The P94 series pickups are P90 windings in a Humbucker size. They will not be a drop-in fit for a Casino which has Dog Ear P90s. Thromann doesn't list a Gibson dog ear 90 but Fralin and Seymour Duncan are good brands.

If I were in Europe I would check with Creamery https://www.creamery-pickups.co.uk/custom-handwound-pickups-from-the-creamery/custom-handwound-replacement-p90-pickups.html#CASINO61

Or one of Bareknuckles P90s https://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/pickups/p90

Hope that helps.

There are many other options you can try. I know there are several good pickup winders in Europe and UK but I don't have experience with them so don't know enough to recommend.

Further research shows that it's not Thromman that doesn't offer the dog ear Gibson P90s. Gibson doesn't offer them on their site either! But you can buy the soap bars and then buy dog ear covers for them.

Amazon lists several different dog ear covers pretty cheap. Cream, black or chrome. But most appear to be metric and you may have trouble fitting to a Gibson pickup.

I'd try getting the guitar and playing it for a while. Decide what you don't like about the oem pickups and go from there.

Hi again,

I have taken your advice and found a John Lennon Casino Outfit that comes with the Gibson P90's.

The only thing is the price is 1100 euros.

I looked around the guitar shops here and have found a GIBSON Studio Memphis ES-339 2016 Electric Guitar Ginger Burst with 57 Classic and Super'57 humbucking pickups for 1489 euros. (The store that is selling it is claiming it's on sale and I am saving 941 euros...)

Regardless, for a few extra hundred euros, the guitar is now a Gibson but is it worth it?

I have also found a GIBSON Memphis 2018 ES-330 Electric Guitar Sunset Burst that comes with 2 MHS P90 Dogear for 2576 euros.

I am guessing that this looks like the closest thing to a real equivalent of the guitar Lennon and the rest of the boys would have been playing...

After all and from what I understand, the Epiphone Casino was based on the ES-330 model with the P90's.

And it's a lot more dough... more than double...

What would you recommend?

I can't recommend any. Only you can decide if "Only a Gibson is good enough." We all have to answer that question from time to time.

I will say that I don't think the current P90s in the G guitars sound the same as the set on a mid 60's LP. I don't have an old 330 to compare.

I do think the current Epiphone guitars have been pretty nice. QC is better than most. Even the electronics are getting better. But most will tell you to change all elec. from jack to switch pickups ect. But you know that part.

I don't have any experience with the '18 model 330 but they seem to be getting pretty big discounts here in the States. Most '18s are.

Thromman has the Epi Casino at less than 500 Euro, Looks like the John Lennon is about twice that. If the JL comes with a hsc and the USA electrics it would only be a bit more than a standard with upgrades you are talking about. Depending on what you buy and whether you do the work or hire it out. JL will probably hold resale value better. But you never know.

You'll have to do the math yourself on the others. If "only a Gibson is good enough." Then you've already made the big decision and you only have to play the ones you have found and decide which one fits you the best.

I'll be looking forward to hearing what you decide.

I went to the local guitar store who had from what it seemed like the last ES-330 in the city.

The touch, feel and sound was so rich. It really felt like a masterpiece in my hands and to my ears.

It felt like the day I tried my Les Paul. Needless to say, I walked out of the store with the ES-330.

So, I guess I need to start looking at amps now.

I am thinking about a 50 watt Marshall, something small and easy to carry but loud enough to jam with a drummer.

What kind of amp(s) do you have?

What would you recommend?
