OldGuitarGuy
My Epiphone EJ-200 has a dead first fret high e that just sort of pings instead of ringing. The space between the first fret and the bottom of the string is less than .06 when holding the string down at the third fret. Is the nut slot too deep? Should I just fill it with a super glue and baking soda mix and recut the slot? Will it lessen the sustain?
QuestionMark
Try slightly (1/8th to 1/4er) tightening the truss rod to add a little more tension on the neck at the first few frets. That should slightly raise the action off of the 1st fret. Be careful to not over tighten the truss rod (as it could snap.). But, the truss rod is there for the purpose of slightly tightening in case there is fret buzz on the first few frets. If you are not comfortable tightening the truss rod, take it to a luthier to do (or to do a complete set up.). That should solve the problem. Hope this helps. zombywoof
You seem to be having a time of it with high E strings. While it could be you need to add some relief to the neck it can also be the string is binding in the nut or saddle. Back in the day when it was not uncommon to own an el cheapo guitar which did not have an adjustable truss rod we used to stick a piece of paper or thin sliver of cardboard in the slot to deal with the issue. Bottom line though, it might be wise to simply bring the guitars in for a proper setup. It is often like re-discovering your guitar.

This! there are many ways to address this however. but, unless you posses the tools and that kind of know how, it's better to just "pay the man"
