Dadou
Hi all, I recently purchased a Gibson J-35 and was wondering how rosettes are made on Gibson acoustics. Are these decals or veneers ?
Dash_Starkiller
The top is routed and the inlay material (plastic, wood, pearl, etc) is then glued in place. From what I’ve always seen. I don’t think any Gibson has ever used a decal. I could be wrong. Maybe the C-0 line.

Dash_Starkiller
Here's a C1 with the decal Thanks for the visual Dave. Yea I remembered those always looking roughed up haha. I guess playing it with a pick when it wasn’t intended to.
Dadou
Thanks for the info, good stuff here. So I'm guessing the inlay must be a piece of plastic like 0.3-0.5mm thick. They then route out the top glue the inlay in and sand flush as far as I understand. The one on mine looks similar to that of the J-45. I'm guessing it's the same procedure for all Gibson guitars then
