yoda
I've been thinking about changing out the stock pickups in my explorer to something cooler, the 500t is a little hot for my taste. I'm wondering what you guys would recommend?
AXE®
I have 57's in mine and they are pretty dang versatile.
Laney1566
I would like to eventually like the 490R-498T with gold covers on mine to match output levels with my SG's.
AXE®
I think that output combo would be a excellent choice also.
GuitarJunkie
Anything other than those horrific, ceramic abominations would be an excellent choice. I've already yanked them out of two guitars, with plans for another two in the future.

tbonesullivan
the 490T / 498T would be a good combo, or some 57 Classics, or maybe the Jazz/JB combo from SD, or the Tone zone/Air norton from dimarzio. there are a ton of pickups out there to choose from. The Ceramics are high output and fat sounding, and seem geared towards metal.

lowb5str
WCR Pickups makes various drop-in replacements that recreate the '60's and '70's classic rock humbucker sounds. Is that the kind you seek?
MojoRedFoot
Make 7 up yours. j/k junkie. It takes all types to make the world go round. I also considered SD JB/jazz combo
Riffster
I like the stock pickups on the Explorer, they are not versatile but what they do they do it well. Lowering the volume does give other tones but not like those from Bursbtbuckers or 57's or other normal or lower gian pickups. Having said that I would go with 57's, with the "plus" version on the bridge although I have not herd them on an all Mahogany guitar I am sure they would sound great.
