Thanks it really is a versatile bass, I have it strung with flats right now
for that 60s style thump.

And here is a sad one, with quote from my site:

"Below is something just a tad bit morbid. In early 2005, two people were browsing an outdoor tag sale when a drunk driver went off the road (after a hit and run of another vehicle) and plowed through the yard sale, running over the two people, continued on, crossing the road and finally hitting a tree. One person was killed instantly, the other lingered for days. The driver was charged with manslaughter but I have never been able to find out any additional information. This bass was in the yard sale. There are signs where the strings were ripped from it, bending the saddle screws into pretzels, shearing off the knobs, and leaving what appears to be scuff marks from a tire on the pickguard. There is one indentation of a string in the side of the body where it (the string) was likely caught on the car as it plowed through, and probably dragged the bass until the string let go. It's mounted on the ceiling of my shop."

With a battered P-bass in one hand, or
near to hand ... if I had been there, that
driver would not have been arrested nor
charged ... just toe-tagged.

Leo knew his bassists weren't likely to
play Symphony Hall, and so he built a
seriously *multipurpose* machine.

How do you like the piezo with frets ?

I loooove piezo for FL ... but it doesn't
turn my crank with frets. What strings
are on the piezo ?

IIRC Gibby doesn't sell piezo basses.

super nice you can hear the sound of your finger in the strings as you move your hand. The strings are Super Slinky EB roundwounds. the sound is awesome when you combine both pickups

It seems we both hear the same thing, but I'm too much of
a klutz to get off on hearing *my* fingers in the strings. The
fretted piezo MM I tried out was a new SR5, so it hadda be
wearing OEM Slinkies. The mixed PU tone was rich but my
finger and fret noise was competing with the tone. I do have
some mag-piezo fretted basses, but all have flatwounds on
them and don't get much play time anyway. AAMOF, I had
three Fender AE-P's [mag-piezo chambered P-bass], and I
recently parted with the lone fretted one.

I really dig hollow FL basses with piezo PU's.
Add a mag PU to the piezo and I dig it even
deeper. 1st and 2nd are mag-piezo hybrids
[by Fender and Godin]. 3rd is mag-only, and
is a one-off homebuilt [by Bill Roberts]. The
last 3 are piezo-only [Washburn, Takamine,
and Rick Turner]. All 6 hollow or semi-hollow.

Most are 'Pix by Seller', as I'm too lazy, and
my insurance company doesn't care either !!

Coupla cooler notes: The Bill Roberts bass
has a purple heart FB, and the Jazz PU on
the Godin is not a factory original feature.

Much as I dig hollow bodies, nothing wrong with piezos on
a solid body. I mean, anything that makes noise is acoustic
when you get right down to it. OK "Acoustic-Electric" ... but
that term also applies to the hollow bodies.

Notice that these solid bodies tend to have lotsa knobs ...
When you see a StingRay with 5 knobs, thazapiezo ! And
likewise a basic Corvette normally has one less knob than
this one [3rd pic]. All three are piezo-magnetic hybrids,
thus the extra knobs.

4th pic is a mag-piezo hybrid by Ibnez. Lotsa knobs again.
5th pic is an optical-piezo hybrid by LightWave, so there's
enuf knobs to cover the dual systems. Finally a piezo-only
with just 3 knobs [by Zeta].

Fun details [at least I think so]: The Vett has EMGs, kinda
rare on a Wick. The Ibnez [EDA905F] has a non-wooden
body and FB ... altho the back of neck is the typical maple.
The Zeta is a 34" EUB that can also be played horizontally
on a strap ... altho the arco-enabling FB radius feels odd
when played horizontally. Very playable but very strange,
so it affects your speed and cadence in an uprighty way.

--------------------------------

BTW, some folks set up their mag-PU solid body FL ax to
sound more fretless, which tends to mean set up for more
mwah. While it may sound "more fretless", it also gets to
sounding like an over-done FX trick ... cuz in a way, it is.

Another approach is to have a piezo-equipt FL solid body.
The piezo tends to sound more woody and stringy, even if
you set up for minimal mwah. Problem solved [by throwing
money at it ... ].
