Swapping GA5 tubes - Can you use only JJ's?

I have heard that JJ's are the only tubes small enough to fit in the GA-5. And even those are tight, as the amp tech I had look at mine a while ago had a heck of a time removing them. (both the EL84 and the 12AX7)

So, has anyone succesfully tried any other tubes in their GA-5?

So...I'm guessing everyone out there in Gibson Forum Land has the stock JJ's in their GA5's

Hi' date=' Fiddler!

As you have probably guessed, this subforum isn't the most frequently visited! <g>

My GA-5 Les Paul Junior Goldtone still has the original JJ tubes, and I haven't felt the need to change them. But, sooner or later, vacuum tubes burn out, so at some point I'm going to have to replace them...which is why I'm glad you started this message thread! <g>

There is a nifty discussion thread about the GA-5 over at, of all places, the Telecaster Discussion Page. Among the topics discussed in the thread are some great (and cheap! <g>) GA-5 modifications and tube options.

You'll have to search the thread ("swap tube" maybe? <g>) but I'm pretty sure there's an answer to your original question there!

Great little amp, isn't it? <g>
