MM50 Mandolin

The best place to find owner input on the MM-50 would be the Mandolin Cafe message board. Search the 'this month and older' archives for 'MM-50' and you'll get a lot of hits (try this link).

There's some folks that like them, and some that hate them; but most regard all the Asian mandolins as the same: good starter instruments, but not in the same league as a Gibson, or anything made in the USA. The best advice is to try several if possible. The specs have varied over the years, but a new one will have a solid spruce top, laminated maple back and sides, and be made in China. Older ones can be from Japan, Korea, or Indonesia.

I was hoping that an Epiphone Masterbilt mandolin would appear, but apparently Gibson decided to introduce an upscale Asian mandolin under the 'Flatiron' name instead. These are a bit pricier, but the early reviews tend to be good. Some of the owners of original Montana-made Flatirons got upset, fearing that the reputation behind the Flatiron name would suffer; but hopefully that won't happen...
