I recently bought a sg jr that I found at a local pawn shop and can't find out anything about this model. I was wanting a lp jr but couldn't turn this deal down. I know the strings need replaced but are there other cheap mods that will help out with the sound? I appreciate any info. Thanks

Does it sound bad to you?

You might want to change the tuners... Those bolt-on Juniors have the worst (i.e. cheepest) tuners money can buy... I throw them right in the trash.. Other than that' date=' there's really not much more you can do except get a better P-90 for it.. . But that's up to you... If you don't mind the sound of it, then it's fine...

Some folks might say change the pots while you're at it... I say, if it aint broke.... Don't fix it.

You [i']could[/i] replace the plastic nut for one made of bone, or tusq, or whatever....but I think the difference is marginal, since the nut only affects the tone of the open strings. You might want to get some lubricant for the string slots, though.. Graphite (pencil lead) will work fine.. There's also a variety of commercial products available.. That will help with tuning, so the strings don't bind up in the slot. You can tell the strings are binding if you hear a "pinging" noise when you tune it.

That's about it for simple mods....

Check this place out... www.guitarfetish.com

They got great stuff for mods that don't cost too much..

The best, the least expensive and the best bang for your buck, to my mind, is replacing the nut. Entirely too many of them aren't cut right and bind on the string. Plus, I like the better intonation I get from an intonated nut. I've got the Earvana nut (http://earvana.com) on 4 guitars, and 3 other guitars have custom made nuts, 2 of them intonated. Its an easy do-it-yourself install, so very cheap if you would rather have a tech do it. Guitar will need to be properly set up anyway, so its a nice combination to take to a good tech. After that, my personal opinion is that Epi pickups are usable, barely, and I change them on - mmm, not on either of the Elitists - every other Epiphone as much to experiment with other sounds as because I prefer other than Epi pickups. I usually replace all the wiring, pots, switch, jack, bridge and tailpiece as well. That, though, depends on how well I like the fit and finish of the hardware on that particular guitar. There is an audible difference, but it is very small and to many, maybe even most, not worth the cost of the modification.

Some of us around this site think you will get a bigger change in tone by upgrading your amp, or upgrading the speaker in your current amp. Both of those will help as well. Does that help?

I agree with Gary and Lerxst. I have an SG Junior ('bolt on') that most people wrote off as a piece of junk. Now for the good news...

I slapped some GFS keystone tuners on there and Im telling you it very rarely goes out of tune.

It is one of my most fun guitars to play. Check out the GFS links above we gave you. Look at their "Gibson style keystone" and "Grover" style tuners. They work great and also look great! Their prices are incredibly cheap for any modern day mod.

The rest of the stuff is your call...me personally if nothings binding (yet!) on the plastic nut and the electronics work thats about all I will do, unless of course an emergency strikes. Then again, Im a cheap bastard. (Well maybe not, :^o I did replace the PUP, the Bridge, the PG and the knobs too)

Then again, you already have a P90 on yours so you wouldn't need to change that and even if you decide to the GFS P90 is only a little over 30 bucks!

But still...A whole different guitar for nickels and dimes.=D>

I appreciate all the replies, I had checked out Guitar Fetish and will be ordering the tuners soon but am wondering about changing the pup's. For $30 it would be worth it but they show their P-90 replacement, mean 90 and dream 90's. Is one really better than the other or is it just a matter of personal taste?

Different tones.

But as I said, if you have a 'Dogear' P90 on yours now, that's the one that would fit your guitar the other pickups you mentioned are replacements for 'humbucker housing' guitars only. They won't fit on your P90 style guitar.

Besides, if you already have an Epi P90 you should get plenty of great tone from that Junior.(but of course if you don't like the tones it gives you, there's plenty of Dogear P90's to choose from to replace it with including the GFS)

In my honest opinion, you would just need to change out the tuners on that guitar. You would be better off deciding on your amp now. Check out the Roland Cube series, great SS Modelers.

Indeed... I think the stock P-90 is plenty good.. If it's anything like the ones on my Casino... Now your next tone consideration is gonna come from your amp... Roland Cubes are a good choice, so is a Vox Valvetronix (Dat's what I use!), a Crate Palomino is nice... Or an Epi Valve Jr.. I'm thinking of getting a Valve Jr. myself, and mod the heck out'v it...

I was also looking at the valve jr. I was wanting to go to a guitar center or someplace where I could play on it and hear the difference. I currently have a line 6 spider available and I'm not impressed with it. Thanks again for the post on the pup's. I guess I got one of the good ones cause it does have pretty good tone and like you said, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I'll let you know on what my amp choice is, Keep on rocking!
