Ok, so you've got your first potential hit song recorded, mixed, and mastered and you're ready to unleash your prized creation to the masses. Or are you? If the words "music publishing" don't mean anything to you, then today's lesson is exactly what you need. Sit back and get a quick tutorial on the basics of protecting your music, and making sure your eventual payday doesn't go into someone else's pockets.

Today's invaluable tips come from the Berklee College of Music and Eric Beall, who is a music publishing veteran and Berklee professor. His background includes 15 years as creative director for Zomba Music Publishing, so he might know a thing or two about correctly setting up a music business to succeed the first time around, instead of having to learn on the fly and figure everything out by yourself—usually while someone else profits from your creative endeavors.

Beall offers some great tips on how to set up your own publishing company, and the knowledge needed to make it happen, including information on where the income streams come from, how the money is divided up, how to issue licenses to writers (including yourself), and other important technical issues that should be addressed. He also touches on the importance of having a good business plan, and how to get your music out to people—whether it makes money or not—so that it generates enthusiasm in the marketplace. His advice is general, but very important and useful to anyone wanting to break into music publishing.
