Lerxst1281733995
My Dot came in today! I'd say overall, it's a pretty decent score... It's one of those with the dreaded "Used" brand on the back of the headstock, but all the flaws that I've found are cosmetic... There's some finish irregularities in the clear-coat on the lower bout of the guitar... It's a little hard to describe them (impossible to take a picture of them)... They look like smudges, or like residue on the surface, but they won't wipe away.. It's in the finish... You can only see it in the light at the right angle, so I'm not gonna let it bother me.. Not for the price I paid for it... There's also a scuff on the back of the headstock and the TRC looks a little cracked at the tip.. But I was gonna replace that with a blank one anyway... (I'm not really fond of the name "Dot"... Where does that come from, anyway? Because it has dot markers on the fretboard??). Other than that, everything else seems ship-shape.. Action's low... It's got a bit of fret buzz.. Neck needs some slight tweaking, but that's to be expected.. Pups work and sound......... Ok. The neck pickup is still slightly muddy and it's cranked down flush with the pup ring... Definitely gonna swap out the pups... But right now, I'm still getting adjusted to the tone.. I'm so used to the P-90s on my Casino, I've forgotten what humbuckers sound like! It's got a tighter sound than the Casino for sure... I haven't put 'er through all the paces yet. Just playing her clean, mostly.... I've never owned a semi-hollow before, so I'm getting know 'er.. In observation of the new guitar rule, here's a few pics... I've discovered that it's really hard to take a good picture of a red guitar... And I don't know JACK about photography.... They all come out looking way more RED than it really is... But here it goes.... Made at the dreaded Dae Won factory in July of '06... Here you can see the chinger on the corner of the headstock..

Lerxst1281733995
Yeah, I was gonna ask the same thing... Did you have to modify it? Nice pic, too.. I assume that was taken under natural light? Mine doesn't look quite that dark, but it's definitely not as bright as it looks in my photos... Thanks for the props on the angles, JG... I was pleasantly surprised at how the close-ups came out... I actually took those on my workbench with a (somewhat faded) black sheet underneath it... My pics always look darker when I post them on this (and the old) forum.. Made for a nice solid black background...

Vic Flick
Whoever Wacko and Yakko are! They're the Warner Brothers from Steven Speilberg's Animaniacs. Dot's their sister.
lostindesert
It's called ''dot'' because of the dot's on the fingerboard like on early Gibson ES-335's. The later model got the block inlays. Peter
jcwillow777
Congrats on the new guitar Lerxst. I'm at work so I can't see the pics, they have blocks on some stuff on the internet here. I think Spud's Dot is an Elitist, but I'm not positive. If it is they come with 335 type pick guards. I had one made for mine. I think it was terrapinguitars.com but I'm not positive. Since I'm at work I can't look to see for sure, I have it bookmarked. My Dot is definiitely my go to guitar, also a 2nd. I know you will love it. I'm looking forward to seeing it when it is all tricked out.

Svet
Hi, Spud does own an Elitist now but the guitar in the picture is of his old Dot. You can see the sticker in the top f hole to prove that. He carved that PG himself if memory serves. A search on the old forum would turn up the answer. Svet

Biff
Congrats, Lerxst!! dang; everybody is getting a new axe. I've got to get something. I cant stand it ! Why not try a new strap' date=' it's cheaper than a new guitar :- I had to ease my pain by ordering another 3/4" vintage strap which I and my dog both prefer (my dog likes to shred the sheepskin pads which I don't ever use anyway). $16 + $7 intl.shipping, great value (got a dark brown that's darker than the one in the picture). matiac
Dude! That's a sweet lookin' guitar, first person I thought of was Alvin Lee, just without all the schtickiz. Congrats on a fine aquisition! Now let's hear it...
Lerxst1281733995
Thanks everybody... Now it's on to the mods! I was wondering if I could get some opinions from you guys in regards to pickups... I was initially going to go with the GFS Vintage '59s as a matter of course, but now I've been thinking about the Fat Pats as well... Has anybody tried both? I'm looking to get as close as possible to a 335 sound , so I reckon the '59s are the way to go, but there's something alluring about the higher output of the Fat Pats.... I know 'hot' isn't everything and most of his pickups are over-wound.. I just wanted to hear some opinions... (I know we all have a hard time expressing them, but try your best! :- ) Also; how's the clarity of the neck pickups (both types)? The Dream 180s look interesting too, but that's a horse of an altogether different color!

jcwillow777
I put 59s in mine and I love 'em. The clarity is very good on the neck pickup, not too muddy. The bridge pickup is great too, not to bright, almost a little Stat like, a nice chime. I find myself using the bridge pickup for clean rhythm and the neck pickup more for lead with my TS9. I do set it in the middle a lot too. I have to say that I have been a little tempted to get another Dot and put in a set of Mean 90s. I think Biff ordered some, but I don't know if he got them in yet. Maybe he'll chime in on how he likes that set up. Congrats again, and enjoy!! I really didn't even think about getting a 335 until I saw Alvin Lee rockin' out on one. EDIT I did try the Dream 180s in my G-400. I wasn't impressed. They were just to blah for me, so I swapped them out for a Burstbucker Pro in the neck and Burstbucker II in the bridge. Now those are some awesome pickups.
