Old jazz standards represent some of the finest songs ever written and recorded, and the song "Summertime"—composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess—is no exception. In fact, it is widely believed that "Summertime" ties with the Beatles' "Yesterday" as one of the most recorded songs in the history of popular music, with an estimated 2,600 different versions of the song having been recorded in many different languages, and on many different instruments.

Playing this classic song on the guitar also makes for a great practice tool. The jazz chords that make up this song, and their progression, are an excellent exercise in right-hand technique for both beginners and intermediate players alike. The instructor, Fred Sokolow, demonstrates how to play backup while singing the song, and how to play the beautiful chord-melody solo/instrumental as well. This lesson excerpt is taken from the DVD Jazz Chord Solos for Beginners, published by Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop, and features other classic jazz standards like "Fly Me To The Moon," "Georgia On My Mind," "What A Wonderful World," and "Ain't Misbehavin."
