Many guitarists tend to run at the mere mention of music theory. But the reality is that even a basic understanding of music theory can greatly improve your guitar playing abilities—especially your solos.

Understanding where to go on a fingerboard—and why—is an essential premise of music theory, and today's lesson is a basic example of this principle. Instructor Peter Vogl from Watch & Learn Video Primer shows how to construct a basic solo using Bm arpeggios over an Em chord progression, which can then be adapted for use with other root notes.

By watching Vogl and listening to his explanation on why the Bm arpeggio works so well over the Em jam track, you'll be able to get a very basic understanding of music theory. It might even spur you to delve a little more into music theory by purchasing Vogl's excellent DVD, appropriately titled How To Play Rock Guitar.
