Rock and roll hall of famer Jack Casady knows a thing or two about playing bass. His celebrated bass-playing career began briefly with Little Anthony and the Imperials then Ray Charles before he joined childhood friend and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen in the legendary Jefferson Airplane, playing a vital part of the musical revolution that became known as the "San Francisco" sound of the 1960s.

Casady and Kaukonen continued their musical bond in Hot Tuna in 1969, and they still perform all around the world today. In addition, Casady regularly teaches bass workshops at Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch in Pomeroy, Ohio, which offers a variety of year-round seminars and classes for aspiring guitarists, bassists, and songwriters.

Today's lesson simply shows Casady's approach to playing the bass part to a blues progression in the key of A. The lesson is part of the DVD titled The Bass Guitar of Jack Casady, produced by the folks at Homespun, in which Casady shares his ideas and techniques for playing the bass, including the use of partial chords, sustained notes, tremolos, trilling, and tonal variety.
