>sigh< Banjo tuning

What is considered 'normal'?

How is it tuned relative to a guit tar.

A 5 stranger is re-entrant tuned... how should #5 be tuned if you use Guit tar tuning, ie. ? D G B E (I'm a bit of a slow learner... and mostly lazy)

5th string = G = 1st string, 3rd fret on a guitar

4th string = D = 4th string on a guitar

3rd string = G = 3rd string on a guitar

2nd string = B = 2nd string on a guitar

1st string = D = 2nd string, 3rd fret on a guitar

God, I hope that's right. I'm at work and I'm going by memory. That's bluegrass style tuning. Traditionally the 4th string is tuned down to C.

KS has it right- for 'G' tuning.

THere are only about 180 different tunings for the banjo- especially if you play 'old time' as I do. But probably a half dozen get you around a lot of the literature. It seems that many players get into a certain niche of the repertoire and have their favorite tunings.

At first, all the tunings freaked me out and kept me from trying to play OT (clawhammer). THen I realized that you don't need to learn any chords (well, you rarely use them) , and that just opened the whole thing up!!

So... nobody'd get all snooty if'n I tuned her: G D G B E?

Mebbe I'd better just break down and buy a manual what say?

I guess that's the charm of the old girl. She's very compliant. You can tune her the way you want her and to make things easier, you can drive spikes into her fretboard... odd concept.
