Les Paul Classic Replacement Tuners & Pickguard - HELP!

Hello, I am about to become the owner of a 2001 Les Paul Classic in the next few weeks. It has no pickguard and it comes with those green Kluson tuners which I am not a fan of. It seems there are different peg hole sizes in Gibson guitars. Some in inches and some in MM. I would like to put the new Gibson Modern tuners with the tulip keys on the guitar, but need to know if the hole is to large for them or if they will drop right in. If these do not fit, then I would like to use Schallers or Grovers... no locking tuners. Does anybody know what fits this guitar? As for the pickguard, I see that there is the standard, custom, studio and historic listed. Does one of these fit the Classic or does it have its own special pickguard? (I don't care about the "Classic" logo.) Any help on these questions is greatly appreciated.

Welcome Al!

Let's look at these one at a time, eh?

It has no pickguard? It very likely was never drilled for one - mine was not.

Up to you if it's worth it to drill new holes for one.

As for the pickguard itself, the Standard, Custom, Studio and Historic is more about material and color.

They are shaped the same, and the attaching bracket is adjusted to allow proper positioning.

Those green Kluson tuners, I am not a fan of them either but they function just fine - 14:1 ratio.

Different peg hole sizes in regular production Gibson guitars?

I don't recall if my luthier drilled mine or not when I put Grovers on it, been several years.

Love the tuners, but the stability was really no different.

If you have to have the headstock drilled, reconsider your choice of no locking tuners.

Schallers or Grovers are both excellent choices, the new LP Standard has lockers if I recall... don't know who makes 'em.

If you can fit a good quality locker to it, it only helps down the road.

Good luck with the guitar, and post pics as soon as you can.

We LOVE guitar porn!

The green Klusons are the modern " Gibson tuners "

Never had a problem with the green tuners, they are on my Gibson's..99 and 09......now if you don't like the look...there are multiple brands

that will fit with no modification. I sugest you play the guitar a bit before any mods.

The Klusons on the guitar look nothing like the modern ones I am talking about, other than the key, which is still tulip shaped (but chrome finish on the modern ones) The new ones also have a completely different back. They have only one screw, while the Klusons have two.
