Line 6 PodHD

Yeah, I was checking them out last night when I got the email from Line 6.

I like it.

I'm a long time Line 6 user from POD to POD 2.0 to POD XT to POD X3. I also use the M13 FX Modeler.

Now I guess I'll grab a POD HD500 once they get released.

Same here to include a Variax 500; but it appears if you have a X3Live its the same damn unit feature wise and without actually sitting in front of the unit I am not so impressed since the X3 does everything this one does except for the metal case vs hd plastic.

For me, I'm ready to try POD on the floor as opposed to the Bean + FBV Shortbrd. Plus I mainly use the JCM800 and Recto amp models so I really like the new modeling of those (from what I can tell). I wish they would have done an Orange Rockerverb! The new Tube head they are releasing looks/sounds really cool as well, but I'll not be switching from my Mark IV anytime soon.

The X3 Live floorboard has so many features already and I'm not even halfway setting up cabs, effx, delays, etc... I'm having great results with it so far. IMO, how much more do you want? Is anybody out there going to hear any difference? I've heard stuff on cheap amps etc.. that didn't sound bad, and stuff on high end equipment that sounded average. Xbox 360 is "compatible" with the PS3 althought the PS3 has more power. Some prefer Xbox. If I take the plunge, it will be later down the line. For now, I don't NEED an "extra" boost on "sound".

Feature wise yes. Sound quality and 'feel' wise, no. This thing pisses all over the X3 in these areas - it's all new technology Jocko.

That said, a few reports are coming in that it's still got a long way to go before it matches the axefx or elevenrack. I might cancel my order and try one in the store first.

Yes, the Fractal Audio Axe-Fx is awesome, but is $1,499.95 (or $1,999.95 for the Ultra) and the foot controller is $749.00 = $$$$

If you were planning to commit that kind of cash to begin with, the POD HD wouldn't have even hit your radar, just saying.

How much "more real" does the Axe-Fx sound over the new POD HD for the diference in price?

For me, I don't use it live, other than the M13. I like real tube amps behind me.

If I was going to drop that kind of cash, I'd get the new Boogie Mark V and a TCE G-System.

For $399-$499, sure, I'll upgrade my X3 to the HD. I think it sounds real enough for recording.

Those sound really good to me.

More, this time high gain for you metal heads out there. Note, I didn't record these, they're from a kind gentleman in Germany;

Model: Treadplate

Gain 2,5 Bass 2,5 Mid 2,5 Treb 2,5 Pres 2,5 (really fun setting)

Mic: 87 Condenser Cab: 4x12 Tread V-30 (no changes)

Reverb: Medium Hall

Guitar: Johnny Hiland PRS - tuned down half step

Model: Bogner Uberschall

Drive 3 Bass 11 Mid 01 Treb 01 Pres 2,5

Mic: 87 Condenser Cab: 4x12 Uber (no changes)

Sounds pretty damn good to me. Lightyears ahead of the X3. These are exactly what I'd expect a real Recto and Bogner to sound like miced up.

Incidentally this POD is designed to interface directly to the new Line 6 DT50 adaptive amp.

When used together, the POD models the preamp sections of the amp you want, and the DT50 automatically rearranges it's power section to match the model selected on the POD. Sounds like a really cool system.

Check it out here: http://line6.com/dt50/

btw I just got word that my POD HD500 has shipped, should have it some time next week [thumbup]

Really? Who has it in stock? I'd like to order one.

Oh, wait, You are in Perth, Australia. Damn, it may not have released in the US yet.

I bought mine from thomman.de in Germany. They seem to be in stock and selling all over Europe.

Fair enough mate.

Truth be told I'm more interested as to how this thing feels, rather than what it sounds like. The X3 was just too forgiving IMO, it made me sound like an instant Steve Vai (which I'm certainly not). Playing a real tube amp after playing the X3 was hard work, I felt it was hurting my technique so I sold it.

I should have mine in a few days, I'll post a review when I get it.

  • 2 months later...

After my first order getting lost in the mail, I finally got my HD500 today.

I've only had a play with it for a few hours, but I can say that the Hiwatt amp sim is AMAZING - absolutely nails Gilmour's tone.

I'll try the other amps and give my thoughts on those later.

Having owned an X3 in the past, I will say that the feel and latency on this thing is lightyears better, no comparison. Also there is none of the artificial 'fizz' or compression that the X3 and earlier exhibited.

I'll I can say at this stage is, if you get a chance, play one. You could do a lot worse for a few hundred bucks.

Awesome!

I've gone in another direction, so I won't be upgrading my X3 bean with an HD anytime soon.

I'm happy to hear Line 6 has improved their modeling even more. Line 6 has great product!
