dtbradio
A local individual has listed an Epiphone Start-style guitar for a very low price on Craigs list. the add is at http://harrisburg.craigslist.org/msg/2107719857.html. I've attached a headstock photo sent to me by the seller. He also says the serial number is 71211398. That serial number doesn't fit the description of the guitar, or the modern-style headstock. Can someone shed some light on this please? Thanks!

I DONT THINK SO Im guessing its a fake...any other pictures? ask the guy if he has any other info on the guitar. that would really help. also, notify epiphone or gibson about this ad they should be able to shut it down fast
animalfarm
recheck your link - giving a "PAGE NOT FOUND". The only EPI strat -style I found so far has a BLACK headstock. and no serial number: http://harrisburg.craigslist.org/msg/2107049299.html Your style of Git IS the REAL DEAL. I'm providing a link to a Site by one of our own enterprising members (RTH), will give you something to look at. We'll need more pics to help you ID the Git...... Hungrycat
The "Epiphone by Gibson" headstock is a late 80's Samick thing, and those had random serial numbers if I recall correctly. Refer to Robin's Stratophone Epicaster guide.
dtbradio
Try this link. not sure what happened with the other, but this one works on the post preview. http://harrisburg.craigslist.org/msg/2107719857.html

Refer to Robin's Stratophone Epicaster guide. +1 My first electric guitar was an "epiphone by gibson" strat copy. back in the latter half of the 80's it's not a fake im sure. there is a member here who has made up a really good guide on these Epi' strats. The originals had a pointier headstock, but they changed it to a slightly rounder one at some point after "Jackson" got a bit upset about the similarity to their headstocks. you got better pics? animalfarm
Try this link. not sure what happened with the other, but this one works on the post preview. http://harrisburg.craigslist.org/msg/2107719857.html Your "new" link works.... For $65.00, it's worth taking a look at to make sure it's mechanically sound and playable!!!!! If SO, grab it! Electronic problems can be corrected if it actually has any. I would gladly take it home with me. RTH is our "Resident" expert regarding the EPI Strat style of guitars, but using HIS guide, I can verify the Headstock logo design is correct, but am unable to nail it down any closer due to lack of knowledge about this style of guitar. Is it still available?
animalfarm
Speaking of EPI Strats - This just popped up on my local Craigslist. Epiphone guitar - $50 OBO http://odessa.craigslist.org/msg/2108320871.html Same as above, don't know enough to ID the exact Model. By the Headstock Logo, I'm GUESSING ES-300? RTH, You out there? dtbradio
Ok, I checked out the link to the Epi-Strat guide, but none of the models exactly fits what the guy is selling. I'm still gonna grab it if its playable, though. Thanks very much for all of the input!
dtbradio
I looked, I played, I bought. I offered him $60, he took $60. Pretty decent action and pretty good tone, too. The trem will need to be blocked in place before I'm totally happy with it, though. Still, for the price, I'm happy! I'd sure like to know its exact model, though... Here is a link to some VERY close-up shots of the guitar. Hopefully someone will be able to shed more light on exactly what it is: http://www.thebupps.com/epistrat/
strat-o-steve
Not to be rude, but why would anyone "fake" an Epiphone? Kinda like faking a Squier, but who knows, they make fake dog poop!

Steve, you'd be suprised at the lengths (and depths) fakers will go to, they are even faking strings these days, read THIS POST.
strat-o-steve
I know the point of faking instruments is to "make money" off of suckers. I just don't see it being too profitable to fake low end guitars, when your time and effort could go to faking something much more expensive. If this guitar were listed as an Epiphone LP Custom, and the price was too good to be true, then I would have to wonder, but my worry would not be whether or not it was genuine, I would be more concerned with what's wrong with the guitar that the seller is not telling! RaSTuS, that's interesting......faking guitar strings! China has no soul!........LOL Everyone in this forum probably knows the quality of Epiphone guitars, and I think it would be easy to spot a fake. Simple, the more expensive guitars are going to attract much more scrutiny from the buyer, also, expensive guitars are usually purchased by people with a greater understanding of that particular model and what to look for, whereas the cheaper brands are usually bought by beginners and hobbyists with minimal if any such understanding. Aftermarket pickguard. 1988 was the first year of the Explorer-type headstock and the last year of the "by Gibson" logo and triangular truss covers. $60 is a good deal. Its an ES-300. Not the most stellar guitars ever made by Epiphone. $50 is about the most you want to pay for one of those in top condition.
