Maestro Vibrola

I'd like to put a Maestro vibrola on my '98 SG. Any advice?

I don't think you'll regret it. I much prefer the action to that of a Bigsby, and fitting is quite easy. When marking out the position for it, before making any holes don't automatically assume that the position of the strap button is dead centre. It may be slightly off-centre. Run a piece of masking tape on a straight line from the nut all the way down.

I was wondering myself why You can't get these through Gibson ? I have a friend that wants one on his SG ,and he can't get one. They want him to send it to them to install it , so they must have them.

I just purchased a Non-Reverse Firebird Custom Shop with the Maestro. I think the Custom Shop only puts them on Historic Re-Issue Guitars to make them more attractive and desirable. So far I've seen them on historic SG's and Firebirds.

I put one on an '02 SG Standard and love it. The look is great and I don't think it harms the tuning.

Make sure you measure, or even better have someone's guitar to eyeball.

Hi ! Are you talking about 61' ou 62' sideways Maestros or about Lyre Maestros?
Is Gibson accepting to put 61' maestros if we send them our guitars?

I am also looking for a 61'Maestro for my 61' reissue SG.
But since I am in France, I don't really want to send my guitar back in the US...

No, they never made an LP with a Vibrola TP. After market vibrola type TPs are available through AllParts or try eBay - I've seen them on there too. Gold & Chrome - short & long. The only thing with the after market ones is they don't have the engraved Lyre or Gibson logo on them.

Be careful. Not every Gibson SG is suited for fitting a Meastro Vibrola on. [omg]

I once owned a 1990 Gibson SG Standard. That particular SG had a Shaller roller bridge mounted, which was standard to the guitar. At a certain point I decided that I wanted to add a lyre vibrola to the SG. So, I ordered the parts (even the lyre engraved cover) and what happened was that if I would have mounted the vibrola, the body behind the bridge was too short. The vibrola would have sticked out at the bottom (ie at the strap button side). For a short while I was really sick about that. I then sold the parts, sold the 1990 SG and bought myself a nice 1963 Gibson SG (Les Paul) that had a sideways vibrola....

Thanks!I put a aftermarket VIBROLA on my LP SPECIAL, there are 2 kinds of aftermarket vibrola, the shorty & the standard with the tailpiece, I had to go with the shorty due to the fact the body wasn't long enough to fit the other also I had to bend the arm up a little bit, I think you'll be ok & be able to install it youself

There are 2 kinds of aftermarket vibrola, the one with the large plate & the other simpler model attached with 3 screw mount, I installed the latter on my 1990's LP Special due to the fact the body of the Special wasn't long enough to accommodate the larger vibrola, further I had to tweak & bend the vibrola arm upwards as it was too close to the body to get any whammy on it, I was able to take measurements off my early 60's SG to determine which model to install.
