Arlen RothOne of the absolute coolest licks to play on electric guitar is also one of the oldest: rockabilly licks. This style is most closely associated with the great Scotty Moore, who played guitar on many of Elvis Presley's greatest recordings, including all of his early work at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. You can hear it clearly in songs like "That's Alright Mama," "My Baby Left Me" and "Mystery Train."

For Arlen Roth, rockabilly licks are among the most enjoyable to both play and teach. They're also some of the most challenging to learn correctly. According to Roth, the key is correct left and right hand syncopation, and in today's exclusive lesson from Gibson Lifetstyle Roth demonstrates the basic rockabilly licks in both the E and A positions. He also explains how to play the licks using the pick and finger "hybrid" picking you should already be familiar with from a previous lesson. He also shows you how to use the rockabilly licks in various lead/solo parts.
