Guest Gibson Lifestyle
Arlen Roth Daily Lesson: The 'Memphis' Lick Gabriel J. Hernandez | 09.02.2008 Last week's lessons — especially the ones detailing the specifics of the 7th and 9th chord positions — should have set off a firestorm of ideas inside your heads! At the very least, it should have made you very curious as to all the possibilities when using these wonderful chord positions. Today's exclusive lesson from Arlen Roth shows us one more extension of the 9th chord position — an extension known historically as the "Memphis Lick." If you remember, it's also the name of a famous Chuck Berry tune. But it was first utilized by the great T-Bone Walker. Guitarist Lonnie Mack also used it in the early 1960s. Roth explores the importance of knowing that you don't have to play the entire chord in order to make it work. As Roth points out, using the partial forms of these chord positions sometimes makes it easier to go from phrase to phrase. With Roth's guidance, you'll be incorporating these unique positions into your repetoire in no time.
