1996 Gibson Les Paul '59 reissue

I got this guitar last week at a local shop

It's all original except for the Grover tuners,but I am going to leave those on because the work great and give the guitar a Bloomfield vib

It has some checking on the body but I think it looks good.

Hi there truetone.

I saw your very sweet-looking R9 over in the main section.

As far as the checking goes;

I have a '95 R0 with similar body-checking and asked over at MLP whether this was normal. The following is what I was told...

Apparently between '94 and '97 the Custom Shop was experimenting with different formulae for the top-coat lacquer. Some were more successful / stable than others. Some of the lacquers used show a far greater tendency to check than the formulae chosen for the pre-'94 or post-'97 instruments.

I have an earlier R9 ('93) and there is not a hint of checking anywhere on the guitar so this would seem to add credence to the info.

If you'd like to see a couple of snaps of the checking on my R0 for comparison with your R9 send me a PM!
