post-10686-048768900 1301781692_thumb.jpgI was talking to a man today about guitars he had for sale in a local trading paper. He has an Epiphone Chet Atkins model. Pretty sure its a Country Gentlemen II. It sounds like it hasnt been played much and is in good condition. My problem is I cant find out how much it is worth. Any ideas? Here is the guitar.

There's a black one on eBay right now for a BIN of $888 + shipping: http://cgi.ebay.com/...=item27b84d7206

The current 12th Edition Blue Book of Electric Guitars values the Epiphone Country Gentelman II at $600 in 98% mint condition, although there is an Elitist model ELCG that it values at $2,000 at 98% mint. The BB also states that in 2006 it was renamed the Country Deluxe.

The 2011 Vintage Guitar Price Guide shows the Elitist Country Gentleman at $1,000/$1,250 low/high condition. No listing in the VGPG for a non-Elitist version that I can find. I have seen actual sold Elitist prices (at least hollow bodies) far outstrip all book values on eBay recently.

Nice guitar BTW, I'd grab it if it was local and the price was reasonable.

Thanks for the reply Brian. The guy is asking $800 for it. He also has a Gretsch Country Club as well but the price of it is a bit out of my league. He bought the Epi new and he seems to know it was'nt made long and that it has some value. I am pretty sure it is not the Elitest version. He has had this since the early 90's I believe. If I could get it for 5-600 I would jump on it. If I bought it I would most likely want to resale it and make a few bucks.

Thanks for the input and if anyone else has any info to share I would appreciate it.

Imho, $800 seems like a lot to pay for a Korean Samick that probably has mediocre pickups on it. I'd rather put that $800 towards something like a used Elitist (any hollowbody), or if you want to stay with the Chet vibe, a Gibson CA Tennessean. I recently saw an orange Tennessean at a local store going for $1199, in near mint condition. If I didn't already have one, I would have grabbed it. These have the long scale & slightly wider neck, but also have sixteen frets clear of the body whereas the CG has fourteen. Also re the Elitist CG, a local Guitar Center had one forever & couldn't seem to sell it. Last price I saw on it was $1500. At some point someone removed the black armrest, revealing two large mounting holes in the top. Really a shame to see it deteriorate as it sat there. One final thought: in the low buck category, the current semi-hollow Valensi Riviera gives you real Gibson P94 pickups for $699. There are many good options out there.

Hollow body Elitists are fetching big bucks these days. Elitist Sheratons and Broadways are up to near $2k and Byrdlands are around $2,500. Even used Elitist Dots are going for $1,000 to $1,200 or more on eBay.

The Valensi with two P94s does seem like a fair new price, even if it's not made in Japan.

brianh - Yes, Elitists can be rather spendy, but good deals do come along. The local GC had a used Elitist Casino going for $899 (it didn't last long!). As for the current Valensi, it's made in Korea by Unsung. I picked one up about a month ago in near mint codition for $560, and the build quality is very good (I'd say consistent with the Sheratons they were putting out before the switch to China). The P94s make this a sweet deal. Only major concern for some might be the smallish neck.
