Hey guys. I just picked up a bass for $45 because it was so unusual. I play guitar but have mad respect for the bass. I'm sticking it in the Epiphone bass section because there is a sticker on it that says eb40 and it is clearly shaped like a les paul. Any help would be great. thanks in advance.

Oh yeah, it's a short scale bass.

Well from what I know there is no such thing as an epiphone EB-40 bass. and the EB basses are SG bodies, not les paul.
and the head, pot placement, and pickguard look all wrong. so I doubt it. but if it plays well, I say keep it! [biggrin]

Nope. Not an Epiphone. The headstock is a dead givaway.

There is/was an EB-0, 1, 3, 35, 100, 231,EBV, EBS. EBD, EBSF & EBS6.
None of them are Les Pauls.

Judging by the staple pickups, slide switches, bridge & tailpiece, it looks like a late 60s / early 70s Matsumoku (Japan). It could have been sold under any number of brand name like Aria, Conrad, Univox, Lyle, Ventura... Sometimes they were unbranded, but some had badges on the headstock that could be removed.

Matsumoku did make some guitars for Epiphone, but that's not one of them.

I found your thread about the EB40 bass today as I returned home with the exact same bass. I was wondering if you'd found any info. I can't find anything. It is kinda cool. I paid $40 for it but mine is missing 2 tuning pegs, one of the pick-ups is out and there are chips all over it. I am in Nashville and there are a couple of guys that have shops that deal in alot of vintage MIJ stuff. I will carry it in to see if they know anything. Have you taken yours apart to see if there are any clues inside? I plan to do so tomorrow.
