Other instruments anyone?

Hey guys, I love guitar, it's one of my favourite instruments to play. I was just wondering if there's anyone else like me who is experienced with other forms of music-making as well. I'm a Grade 9 RCM (That's Royal Conservatory of Music) pianist and have been playing all my life. I've also been playing drums in a band for the last two years. I use a Yamaha studio upright and a Fender Squire drum set (I know, I know, but I couldn't afford a Tama or Pearl at the time and I really needed it and it was on sale...) with Evans skins and Sabian B8 Pro cymbals. I still find I play guitar the most, however... especially with the likelihood of a new purchase *cough* coming up.

I play bass a lot with a Fender Mexican Jazz through a Carvin R1000, 4;10T that will shake the World. Usually now not so much, because my band is booked up.

I tinker with my wifes 1933 Gibson A-00 mandolin that we bought from George Gruhn that belonged to the GREATIST FIDDLE PLAYER EVER, Scotty Stoneman.

And, I fingerstyle with my '03 J45 rosewood (ebony) which is totally different from playing lead with my working band.

Besides a ton of guitars I have an old Kay upright bass, an electric bass, a bunch of violins, 3 banjos (one I built from scratch) a mandolin I built from scratch, a dulcimer, a lap steel, a sitar, a uke, and a 68 key mini upright piano.

Whew. i think that's all.

Cool Thread....

Aside from my guitars I have a collection of old analog synths which include an Arp 2600 and a Mini Moog! I also have a host of analog synth modules including an OB Rack (2 Oberheim expander modules in rack mount with midi modified for midi) Roland MKS 70, 50, and 30, Oberhiem Matrix 1000 among others... This is all stuff I have collected over the years for my studio

On stage in my duo The Sophisticats, I play:

* Saxophone (All saxes, I own an alto and tenor and bring the tenor to the gig)

* Guitar (Gibson ES-330, Epiphone Casino, and ESP/LTD EC-50)

* Flute (Selmer)

* Wind Synthesizer (Yamaha WX5 with various sound modules)

* Percussion Controller (Korg PadKontrol)

* Keyboards (if I bring it to the gig - Korg DS-8 and Korg i3)

And although I don't bring it to the gig, I do play

* Bass (Did this professionally for a while)

* Drums (my first instrument, I don't have a kit or the stamina anymore but I still know how)

I love being a multi-instrumentalist, because each instrument (and each synthesizer patch) wants to be expressed in a different way, and that brings out different things in me, some of which I didn't discover until I learned the new instrument.

Plus I make my own backing tracks (see: http://www.nortonmusic.com/backing_tracks.html) and own about a dozen synthesizer tone modules and hardware digital samplers.

I also write after-market (add-on) style and fake disks for the auto-accompaniment program, Band-in-a-Box. Mp3 demos at http://www.nortonmusic.com/styledemo.html

Music is my passion and profession. I'm lucky.

Guitar is my main squeeze (electric, acoustic, slide, etc.) but I'm also pretty damn proficient in bass (better than most of the bass players I know unfortunately). Sometimes I think I was born to be a good bass player, but I keep throwing my "NOOO!!! I'm a GUITAR PLAYER!!!!" tantrum instead.

I can also do basic drums, however I have been woodshopping heavily to bring my skills way up as it is really the other instrument I have any desire to play besides guitar. I can find my way around keys, harmonica and just about anything else if you give me a few minutes.

I'm no prodigy or anything, I've only been playing for the last five or six years. My real experience comes from being a sound engineer for about seven or eight years. Started in a church but I've moved on to alot of other things as well. It is knowledge and experience that has proved to be invaluable in the studio, live, and as being a musician with a vision.

I'm trying to do something totally crazy (GASP!) which is do a solo album and be the the sole musician on the album and play everything (and have it be just as good as if I hired pros to stand-in). I'm completely frustrated with trying to get what I hear in my head across to other musicians and have them just not get it. Also, with having to sit through endless take after take after take. I'm to the point where I've just said **** it, I'll do it all myself.

Guitar is my main pleasure but I also play Bass and Mandolin. When I was a younger pup I tryed playing keyboards, drums, and trumpet with no sucess. I guess I'm a "strings" kind of guy. I have given thought to picking up the Ukulele and violin sometime in the furure.

OT but, I was at a customers house a while back explaining the new theater I installed for them. I noticed earlier in the

day an old EPI in the corner. So I asked the husband if he played and he said no so I looked at his 50ish wife and I said

oh it must be yours, and without hesitation he looked me straight in the eyes and said No, its not hers, the only instrument she plays is the skin flute and ...............Silence then we all kinda laughed.

I hope this story didn't offend anyone.
