The wife...

Alright, some pub talk...

Let's here what your little women have to say about your music equipment and spending habits...[-(

My woman doesn't nag/complain or anything, but she does say 'this is your last one' every time I get a guitar.

I find it cute when she says that because we both know that it won't be. O:)

She's a musician (and a great one, at that! Piano, violin, French horn.) and loves music equipment, in general.

She loves Les Pauls, too. Thinks they're hot!...but she won't touch mine for some reason.

She doesn't understand why I need more than one guitar, though...neither do I, sometimes. O:)

So, here goes...

Back in July, I verbally agreed to 'no more guitars' after I bought the R8.

Afterwards, I managed to warm her up to the idea of a Strat and she gave me the go-ahead to get it.

The B4 (replaced by the R6) was a bit of a surprise to her...but again 'this is your last one.'

So, now I've agreed to enter into a written agreement. With the possible exception (huge exception!) of a 2009 R9, no new guitars for 5 years.......and I agreed. The date on the paper will be January 2014. Haven't signed anything yet, but I'm actually OK with it.

I thought about it and think I've reached the point where enough's enough. I know I said that some time ago (don't laugh and go dig that up, Thunder), but I've satisfied the cravings. A 2009 R9 is really the last one I want...and that's just so I can have a 50th anniversary of the legend (not the actual aged 50th anniv., but a 2009, nonetheless!) and I also want the 9 9XXX on the back of the headstock. Sad, I know...but it's true.

Mind you, I'm not married yet. It's best to stop now before I end up divorced with only a Yamaha acoustic while my new ex-wife drives around town in her Mercedez Benz SLK! O:)

My wife is pretty understanding overall, but I have 4 kids and the oldest is the only one in college (just started his 3rd year), my 18 year old will be going next year and the 14 and 13 year old are coming close to that age. She now has me on a "trade only" type policy where something would have to go before I get any new gear. Since I love all my guitars now, I think it will likely be awhile before I get another, although a Les Paul would be a very sweet addition.

my wife doesnt complain too much either. but i really am done for a while. i have spent the last 2 years buying guitars because they were cheap, they sounded good, etc....but once i bought what I really wanted, the LP GAS stopped. My R9 is everything I have ever wanted. It is a flametop LP similar in looks to the ones my heros use/used. and while i thought the R8 sounded better at first, i really have warmed up to the brighter sound of the R9. of course, i wonder if i had bought the R9 first, would i have bought any of the others?

My Wife doesnt mind...... What really upsets her is the amount of room required for my hobbies. Its not just my guitars that take up room. I used to race my Rotax Kart which now sits redundant in the garden shed along with everthing that comes with it. (might sell it for an R8)

I now work as others do. Sell one to buy one...

If she doesnt like it..... Tuff sh*t...

Alright, tell you what, Thunder...

You get married first and if your new wife changes her tune and becomes a suckubus, tell me and I'll call mine off.

Hey, no point in both of us suffering, right? eusa_angel.gif

When is your wedding date, by the way?

Mine's...sorry...ours...is July 25, 2009.

My wife....

Never complains, and is the most supportive individual I know where I am concerned. She facilitates my musical purchases.... makes sure we have the financial end good to go when I go out shopping.

She suggested the mandolin... while I had played them before, owning one never occurred to me.

The dulcimer was her idea... she found them at the Smoky Mountain Knife Works and lead me to them... KNOWING I'd end up taking one home. She likes their sound eusa_angel.gif

That 2007 Les Paul Standard? Her idea, too.

The Ibanez in my sig... I came home from Sam Ash and told her I had played a really nice acoustic tonight... her reply? "Where is it? Why didn't you bring it home?"

My Blues Jr.? HER idea to go get me a nice Tube amp for Father's Day... (My idea to keep it room sized.) In fact... my old Marshall MG15 came from her (and my 2 boys, who were very complicit in this) and is really what spurred this resurgance of my musical side.

The day I bought my Fender '57 Twin Mini amp ($29.99) because it was the Stupid Deal... she was still in bed and heard me say "Crap"(it was my 3rd Stupid Deal buy in 4 days) ... she said "What?"

"I'm buying a new amp"

"Ok honey".... I could have been buying the RR Stack.... she never even stirred, let alone ask for any details.

We started dating back when I was still pursuing a music career... she would ask me to bring my 12 string over when I'd come to see her. Not threatened at all by my music!

She considers me working out a riff or lick over and over and over again (until I can't get it wrong) to be serenading her. In fact, if she is in another room, she'll open the door so she can hear me better.

If I were to give up this cushy IT career and go BACK to (trying to) playing guitar for a living, she would be at every show and would support me 100%, just like she always has.

Do I have "rules" for my purchases? Not set by her. I have set the rules... mostly governed by the laws of physics... as in I cannot buy another guitar until I have a place for it, and it's case.

In short, my wife is a blessing to my music. She is my rhyme, and my reason. I don't know what I did to deserve her, but MAN am I lucky.

I have been playing guitar only for 3 years and been married for 2.

My wife is OK with any gear I want to buy because we make decent money between the 2 of us. I have not bought a guitar over $1,000 so that helps.

When she saw me looking at a goldtop R7 she was surprised it was $4Gs, it may be the economy though, if things where better she would not mind me getting it.

I turn 40 in April next year, so I am already making excuses for the next purchase...other than that I do not need anything other than a new Epi Valve Jr Head, the new Hot Rod model that is about to come out.

I gig, and claim the money on my taxes, so I have to spend a few grand a year on top of mileage and strings, ect., to avoid paying taxes.

But honestly, it's hard for me to buy gear that's not needed, and my wife will push me to buy stuff from time to time. I'm not a collector, and play guitars for a long time usually, I like to get comfortable with them.

I'm lucky.

My wife plays guitar and synthesizer.

So we drool on the beautiful guitars in the gear magazines together.

As professional musicians, we can deduct the price of our instruments from our income tax - that's a small incentive.

Together we own a Gibson ES-330, Epiphone Casino, Parker PM-10, ESP/LTD/EC-50, Epiphone Flat-top (unknown MIJ model), Ovation and Alvarez Classical. Leilani (my wife) would like a Casino, I'm GASsing for a new 330 "long neck" that I'd like to put dog-ear humbuckers in.

Being multi-instrumentalists, we also own 3 saxophones, 2 wind MIDI controllers, 2 keyboard synths, 1 flute, 1 Tactile MIDI controller, one MIDI percussion controller, and about a dozen sound modules and hardware samplers.

Add to that a complete PA system and you would think we have all the gear we would want. But music is addicting, and we of course want more stuff.

If the coming election brings a change of political parties and the economy gets better, we will definitely be buying more guitars.

It's simple.... separate bank accounts! My wife and I split the bills that are shared (mortgage, utilities, etc). She pays some, I pay some. Everything else (gas, groceries, etc) we just kinda take turns on. I couldn't tell you what's in her bank account right now, nor could she tell you what's in mine. I find I this system works much better than the joint everything I experienced in my first marriage! Not to go all Dr. Phil on ya, but sometimes keeping a few things separate is a good idea. My 2 cents.

Sorry, but you have to change dates...July 25, 2009, is MY wedding date, you can't have it!! =P~

That's awesome, dude! Are you doing anything special for your wedding?

We're having a small wedding, around 15 people...that's because we're having a destination wedding!

Flying down to a Carribean Island to tie the knot. I wanted a drunken sea captain to marry us on the beach and wear Hawaiian shirts with white shorts, but she insists on getting married in a church.

Hmmm...maybe get her parents to buy me a R9 as a wedding give?? :-k

Why that's a great idea, Tim! #-o

Interesting topic.

My wife doesnt understand why I need to spend so much money. To her a guitar is a guitar. In her little brown eyes there is no difference between a $200 entry level, and a $5000 R9.

Shes a product of her environment growing up in a third world country. Shes been here in Canada for over 20 years now, but she still remembers.

I get a lecture, but she knows by now that I do what I want.

Love you hun!....Im such a kiss ***!

btw Tim......Youve twisted my arm buddy. Ill come to the wedding and represent the boys from Gibson.

ha ha ha! *wink*

My wife doesn't say anything about my swapping habits and doesn't have much to offer in opinion except that some are prettier than others. She does see some of my repair work and knows the work that transpires. She was on pins and needles when I was involved in the Great J200 Quest of 2006 so she either sometimes lives vicariously through me or knows what a whiney brat I can be when I am shopping for something expensive (probably the latter).

I have a few instruments hanging up in the living room but most are in cases in other rooms. Her biggest concern is knocking one over. We have a very small house so it's not like we can dedicate a spare bedroom to cases. I really pushed the envelope a couple weeks ago when I brought home a small upright piano (68 key, 4 ft wide) and made room for it in the room we use for a catch-all.. the room is 6' x 8' and there are two dressers in there, boxes of videotapes, pantry items, extra laundry soap.... you can picture it I'm sure. And here comes Scott wheeling in a 1941 upright.

I love living dangerously.

As any good man will know, women change when they get married. Some things stop (You work it out) +:-@ and some things start (Nagging) =P~ . When you get married, life's priorities change and before you know it you have responsibilities. Most (not all) married woman want different things like children. I thought my "hobbies" were expensive until we had two children, That said they are the best...

All I would say is if your getting married get your expensive toys in the door first.. My wife is and always has been my closest friend but life's a reality check when you get hitched..

Good luck Tim and Thunder...Just PM me and I will send my address for the invite! Wink Wink!

Tim I could bring my Slash and make beautiful music on the beach! He he he he he ....

My father will kill me if i buy a new guitar.

yesterday a asked him " dad, see that guitar, is the Zakk Wylde flying V ginature, it is available at only 2980 euros, or that SG, or or.."

he replied " stop, you've got a new guitar who is used on the stage by some great fuitarist, for the next 2/3 years, or probably more, you won't get a new guitar, because if you try to bring a guitar in that home, you can start doing the luggages and going at your grandparent's house"

probably, i can't get a new guitar =(, but in 2010, or before if i find a part-time job and I gain 3000 euros, i bring at home that kick-*** guitar wyldeflyingv.gif
