I was just watching the good ol' 80's movie Back to the Future and I noticed a big mistake. Michael J. Fox's character gets transported to 1955 and he ends up playing guitar at the "Enchantment Under The Sea" dance. He's playing an ES-345 with added Bigsby. The only problem is that it wasn't invented yet! Humbucker pickups were not available yet either! So...FAIL!

Yeah, I know I'm a dork for even noticing this, but where else am I gonna talk about it? I think if I was a filmmaker, I would try to avoid historical inaccuracies like that. It's amazing how many there are in tons of movies.

They didn't have Delorians then either, shouldn't that time machine have morphed into a Star Model Customline or something.

Even more wrong is that I might consider it for that guitar.

The amp was a late 50's Fender also.

I have solved this mystery (and I need a life):

If time travel was possible, what would we do? Yup, that's correct. We would go back and buy Les Pauls. The 58-60 would get all bought up in a hurry and brought back to the future.

The result? That correct also, Clapton would not have got one, and they wouldn't be worth squat.

So, if this guitar and these amps existed in 1955, what was taken from the past to delay their existence until 1960?

My answer: The STRAT prototype, the "Carson" guitar. If found, would probably be the single most valuable guitar ever, and it happens to be missing. If LEO and the gang had NOT got the stratocaster out when it did, Gibson would have had no competition, and would built what they were building until the Strat.

Furthermore, about the time the film was made, that is when all these butchered strats were all over, and probably copied from the prototype, but since the prototype no longer existed, they aren't worth squat.

If you watch the Johnny Cash movie with Joaquin Phoenix, when they're all touring around, look at the '55 Custom "Roy Orbison"'s playing...it's got Schaller tuners. Don't think they had Schaller tuners in 1955, AND I believe it's also got straplocks, which didn't exist in '55. I look for that stuff too.

The Les Paul was Gibson's response to the popularity of the Telecaster, not the Strat.
1950- Tele
1952- Fender Bass guitar & Gibson Les Paul
1954- Stratocaster
All the above were designed for country music, pre-rock'n'roll.

When do you think Rock N' Roll started?

I'm actually curious. Many people have different opinions on this and I don't think there is one specific "correct" answer.

Rock and Roll started in 1958, that's when i was born, there was no need for it before that event, LOL.

Back home for a day or two. This seemed like as good a place as any to say hello.
Hope to be a little more frequent come fall.

Thanks Guys!

RaSTuS....Yup....I'll set up some pics come fall.

The "Back To The Future" thread is hilarious.
I guess I'm guilty, myself. If a quirk in a movie is so obvious that I see it, then, I wonder if it wasn't put there intentionally...or..was someone just showin' off their stuff?

Re the first Rock and Roll song:It has been generally regarded by musical pundits that Ike Turner's 1952 release "Rocket 88" was the first rock and roll song.
