Recommendations for a case for my ES-125 T?

Spot

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,...I was hoping for some advice from all you ES-125 owners on the Forum.

I have a sweet '60 ES-125 T with a terrible flimsy original case (I think!!!) and I wanted to ask if anyone could recommend a decent after market quality hardshell case? I've looked at the various Hiscox models but nothing seems to work...

Would appreciate any thoughts....

Yeah,..thanks. That's what I thought...

Just heard back from TKL...

hi r______

thank you for contacting us...

we don't have a stock case to fit your instrument however we can certainly produce a custom case...

for your reference... custom cases start at $327.96 (includes american vintage series black exterior / standard brass plated hardware package / your choice of interior lining) and go up depending on the options you select...

if you're interested you can visit our website (www.cedarcreekcases.com)...

to get started... you'd need to select case options... complete the dimension sheet... and send a full scale tracing of your instrument...

take care

Was it close? If so, perhaps 335 cases from another manufacturer might fit better. Are the measurements of the Gator case close to your 125T?

Just checked this out & sent a PM to the OP, but for anyone else who might want to know, the Gator molded plastic 335 case fits the 125T quite nicely. There is a higher line Gator molded case, but the one I'm referring to generally sells for around $89 to $99.

Thanks Bob....

The next level Gator TSA approved also looks nice. Not sure if it will work though...

Don't know about that one. Btw, very nice looking 125, and that alligator chipboard case brings back memories!

...Thanks Bob. She really is a gem. I've taken her to several Luthiers who can't believe she is a '60. They all say the finish is like a brand new Gibson!!!!!

Finally tried her in my TKL case (from my USA Epi Sheri) and she's an OK fit however there is a bit of movement, or rocking, from the neck to body up and down so I'm concerned that this could apply undo pressure on the join which could end in disaster!!!!

...It rocked and was far too deep in the body and smelled to me like a Neck Snap!!!!!

One way to use that Epi case would be to line the bottom of the case with layers of cloth or towels until the guitar body is level and it doesn't rock. But that should only be a temporary deal until you find the right case.

You may also want to try an SKB-20 case at a local store. SKB's web site says it for an ES-135 which may be closer than a 335 case.

This heavy duty case for a Les Paul is fantastic for traveling protection but pricey.

According to MF's photos of the SKB-20, it will be way too deep. It's capable of holding a J200! The ES-125T is approx the same depth as a ES-335, but the neck is set higher off the body.

The MF photos may not be correct. The SKB-20 is the case that SKB recommended for the ES-135 which is very close to the 125. The SKB site is not real great for listing the major models a case will fit. I know it is impossible to list all guitars, but come on, a ES-125 is a very common guitar. The SKB-35 may be not be deep enough. It might be best to find a store that has both cases and try them as the SKB site is of no help with an ES-125.

...Your missing one very important point here CR9,...the "T" in my guitar for Thinline. As per Bob's post,...the SKB-20 is way to deep for the guiatar in question, but may well work for a standard ES-125. Doesn't help me much though...

Yes, for the 125T (Thinline), the SKB-35 is the right case. I tried at least four of these myself in the store when looking for a case for one of my Casinos, and they all had a very poor fit when opening & closing the lid, but that could have just been a bad batch from the factory. Otherwise, the only other comment I would have about the SKB-35 is that it's a fairly large cut on the interior, in order to accommodate guitars with oversize headstocks like the Epi Sheraton (as shown in SKB's promotional photo with the case).

As far as I can tell, the 125T has the same dimensions as other Gibson "full-size" thin hollowbodies, like the 330/335, having a 16" wide lower bout and the same thickness. Obviously, some cases fit better than others, but a case for a 335-type guitar would be the ticket.

...Again, in theory yes. But in practice, not always the case! (...no pun intended).

I've tried a few 335 style cases that do NOT fit the 125 T...including the Hiscox PRO-GS which Hiscox say is a "...Semi-Acoustic Guitar Case. Suitable for Gibson 335 style and similar thin bodied semi-acoustic guitars".

Bottom line is, try before buying!!!!

Video

Well,...it's not ideal IMO. I've done a short video to show the fit above .....

The Gator case has thes same issue that the Hiscox case I tried had,....but not quite as dramatic. It's the body depth being too deep! ....and It's the vertical movement that's the issue, my concern is a neck snap when case is closed. Am I just being paranoid????

I guess I could pad our the bottom of the case to lift up the body. Hmmmmmmmm......

Hi, all. New member resurrecting an old thread.

My son just inherited a gorgeous ES-125T from his grandfather. We had it professionally setup and it plays beautifully, and is in pristine condition. (It's really a miracle that the neck didn't warp after sitting 50+ years in a closet protected only by its original cardboard case.)

Can OP comment on what case ultimately fit the best? I called elderly.com and they had me do some measurements. They think this one should fit OK, but it's not one of the ones mentioned in this thread. The fact that it's a 335 case makes me reticent to pull the trigger given the feedback on 335 cases, above.

Any feedback appreciated. Thanks!
