Wow..........That's a loaded question............496R and 500T are ceramics; SOME use those, I wouldn't......There's the Gibby "Toni Iommi" sig PUs.....

They're good for metal.......Look into Gibby's "Dirty Fingers" pickups; I haven't played them, but, those might do it for you......

The rare times I play and record "metal", I actually use Gibson classic 57s through solid state amps.....Many may say they aren't good for metal,

I say that they are, if used correctly..........I say check out as many "youtube" pickup demo vids as you can find..............

_________________________________________________________________
You have your Ibby RG 760; Good for your metal work.....If you still have your Explorer, it should be stock with ceramic 496R and 500T..........

You could try out other Gibby PUs in it if those are too hot.......If you still have your Gibby LPC, you could put in Gibby 57 Classics for your

hard rock work..............Just some thoughts and ideas................

+1. I'd recommend the 496R/500T combo, or the Dirty Fingers if you want a brighter heavy tone.

Thanks guys!

damian:
When I played my Ibanez for the first time in months I realized how hardrock/ heavy that one sounds!
It has Ibanez pup: s and I just couldnīt stop playing!
After that I need to do something about my Gibson LP, for it is an awesome guitar with an amazing tone!
Iīm playing a lot like: Accept, Metallica Judas and so on.

My Explorer had 496R and 500T like you say, but I canīt remember how that one sounded beacuse
it was always out of tune.(Tremolo) The Explorer went in retour.

I will check out You tube when I come home today.
Thanks again!

I' ve got 496R/500T and a couple of '80s Dirty Fingers.
Some people loves DF and some hate them so i guess it's a matter of taste. I love them. Probably they give their best in compact mahogany solid body guitars such Vs, Explorers and SGs.

Metallian, if your target is to get a '70/'80 hard rock/metal tone i would recommend Dirty Fingers over 496R/500T.

I also own a couple of '57 classic. Amazing pickups. As Damian says, you can still get a nice hard rock/metal tone with them. Do you know Mastodon? I'm pretty sure Brent Hinds uses '57s on his Custom Flying-V silverburst.

PS: I recorded this with my Dirty Fingers equipped Explorer directly plugged into a Blackstar HT5-H. I have an integrated sound card and i used one of those microphones intergated in the headphones. This means the quality of the recording (and of the playing too [biggrin] ) is rather poor.

After listening to Dirty Finger at the You Tube, (Your video) and reading about people who have DF, Iīm going for them.
But only in the bridge position. I have a great blues-solo/Gary-Moore-sound in the other PUP. Wonīt change that! [love]
Thanks!

I generally like lower output pickups('57's and Burstbuckers are my personal favs), but love the Dirty Fingers for a high gain slide tone.

Metallian, I see you run some effects through your amp loop....The "series" loop I presume....Good choice on the DF.....

A 57 or 57+ would be a good match in the neck...( the 57+ might be a better output match..).........

Two good metal pedals I use are the TC Rottwiler, and Tech 21 has some nice " Character " pedals...........

Mosquito3; nice soundclip and singing...........[thumbup] [thumbup] [thumbup] .....

I totally agree. A '57 in the neck is such a sweet pickup.

Thanks Damian, but actually, Robert Plant is singing in the clip, not me :)
I'm just playing the guitar over this backing track ;)

Yes, I have some pedals in the loop for the clean sound, that makes it sound a lot more "professional..".

mosquito3:
Today I have: N= 490 Alnico and B= 498 Alnico.

And now Iīm going to swear in the Church:
My guitar is (in my opinion) extremely good looking in purple see through colouring and golden hardware.
The news to me was that I canīt buy DF with golden cover.
(I canīt have golden cover on one PUP, but not the other. And I canīt have two PUP: s without cover.
I bought my Gibson a lot from "the looks", so that is not negotiable.)
Of course I will keep the original PUP.

What did I buy then?
Seymour Duncans SH-6 with golden cover.

Comments?

Have a nice weekend!

I know damian, but I donīt have nor the knowledge or the tools to do the job.
And my sales contact didnīt dare to do the job himself. That gave my very few options left.
BUT; I think this PUP will be perfect for me.

Also, the problem to cover a Dirty Finger could be the fact that these pickups has 2 rows of pole pieces screws, as you can see in the picture below.
Lowering a whole row you should be able to install a cover, as did a guy on this forum.

Concerning the Duncans, i haven't tried the Distortion or Inveder, but i used to play a Steinberger with a Custom Custom SH-11 in the bridge. Is a pretty powerful pickup, equipped with Alnico II bars. Has a nice tone, but still prefer Dirty Fingers by far.

PS: Guys, i'm sorry for my bad english...i hope to be at least understandable [blush]
