Thoughts on Gibson P-90 pickups?

I seem to be drawn to Gibson P-90 equipped guitars. I love the sound of them clean as well as overdriven. There seems to be some magic in them. I once had a 40's ES-125 that had the non-movable pole pieces. That pickup could really get a grind going. I installed a pair of P-90 soapbars in my custom-made mahogany Tele clone. Very SWEET indeed.

Anyone else want to weigh in on the virtues of the P-90? ..RRod

I've got a '71 (I think) Les Paul Standard with P-90's. (The guitar is the 1954 reissue.)

They are indeed marvelous. Even if it weren't for the "collectability" of the guitar (which I don't care about much), I wouldn't dream of replacing them with humbuckers.

My P90 obsession started with Epiphone hollowbodies, first a Casino then a WildKat. Now I also have a 2005 SG Classic and I just bought a week 37 SG Special with the Alnico 2 pick-ups.

I always find myself leaning towards "P90" style guitars no matter who makes them. I have a Yamaha SGV800 reissue which has soapbar pick-ups and I'm in the market for a Fender TC-90. You're right, there is something "magic" about the sound of a fat single coil. They're subtle when needed, but can still rip your face off when called upon.

Have you tried the Duncans or Frallins in any of you P0 axes? My DC Special has Fralins (under wound neck and slightly over wound bridge) and it just sings. Night and day from the stock G pups. My PRS McCarty came stock with Duncans and they are very sweet with a little less edge than the over wound Frallin bridge pup. I've been heavily into P 90s for many years and can't seem to shake them. They have that tone the tone reminds of a lot of the British invasion groups that made me want to play in the first place.

P 90s nail the Pete Townsend and mid to late 60s Beatles sounds like nothing else out there.

I haven't tried the Duncan or Fralin P-90's. Thanks for the recommendation. I will try to post a pic of one of my favorite P-90 equipped Gibbys. Not sure what the outcome will be on this new forum...??...Rod
