tombir
Hey guys! I am thinking about getting a SG '61 Reissue and have a question about the pickups it comes with. I know the SG comes with two '57 Classic (Alnico II) Humbuckers - BUT: are they the standard-, OR the 4-conductor-version (coil splitting)? I know you can't split the coils in the stock-version of the guitar, but it would be an rather easy modification (if the are the 4-conductor ones). Thanks! StijnV
The factory standard versions have a 2 conductor wiring. Only the aftermarket versions have 4 conductors: IM57R4P-DB / 57 Classic 4-Conductor, Dbl Black IM57R4P-ZB / 57 Classic 4-Conductor, Zebra IM57R4P-NZ / 57 Classic Nickel, 4 Conductor, Potted
TattooedCarrot
I wanted a brown one bad, until I saw one in Guitar Center and realized it had a baked maple board. Killed it for me :(
charlie brown
As long as it's a darker version, of the "baked maple," I don't have a problem. My "Classic Custom," Gold Top, has the darker version, and it's great! If, on the other hand, it's one of those early, very (too) light versions, then...no thanks! My dealer is getting (at least) one, in...in "Cherry." I'm going to check that out, for sure. CB

However, it's a bargain priced guitar and easier to accept. The 61RI, even the satin one, is close to two grand and in that price range I'm not buying baked maple. Id rather buy a cheap used player and refinish it.

charlie brown
Posted this, in the "Tribute" SG thread. But, just in case, I'll post it here, as well. Had a chance to look at a new "Satin Finish" '61 SG reissue, today, at my dealer's. Very nice guitar, overall...finish, construction, neck, etc. HOWEVER, in the case of the one I saw, the "beveling," was no where near, what a '61 should be like! Not even close to the photos, on the Gibson web site! WUWT? This one, looked more like a USA "Standard, in a matte finish, and the small pick guard, instead of the deep, and wide beveling, of the '61-64 versions. Especially in the horns area. ???? But, that was (really) the only thing that was a disappointment! Otherwise, I liked the feel of the neck, and the sheen, of the finish, quite a lot. I know, they've always varied, a bit, in the horn tapers, and bevels. But, this one was just too far removed, from "right," IMHO! So, I guess I'll wait, until they get another one in, with correct beveling. CB

I have to agree.
CelticFrost1992
TattooedCarrot: Do you have or have you tried a SG Special Faded? Wonderful, inexpensive guitars! I have one, it's my #1 and it's every bit the SG that the 61RI is, if not moreso. The pickups aren't exactly what I call versatile (they certainly struggle with high gain) but they have a crisp, biting tone on a clean setting and you can boost it into low-gain electric blues/classic rock territory easily, if that's what you're looking for. While I'm currently in the market for an Ibanez S770PB (with which I can handle clean, Stratty stuff for my ska project and crank up the gain for my metal project,) I'll never let go of my SG and I think that, for what they cost and what you get from them, they're great buys. The neck on mine, in particular, is just a delight to play--although I've heard that they're not all the same--but I'd say they're great to check out nonetheless. You can buy used on them really cheaply, and if you decide you don't love it, you're not out several thousand bucks, like you'd be on the 61RI! And if you don't like the finish...well, you could always get a refin, I guess?

I looked one over and found it was nothing like my '02/03 61 RI SG that was stolen from me in 2004 and much more like the standard/special. Then again, I haven't seen that guitar that was stolen for 8 years now.
