jefleppard
after a very patient honeymoon, i've annuled my marriage to my swd and sold it back to the store i bought it from minus a very fair rental charge. i just wasn't bonding with it. that "full 'o' socks" sound was a little more prevalent than i was able to bear and the guitar never 'opened up' as fable has it. it had the best intonation i've experienced from an acoustic , which is super important to me because notes pulling sharp drive me nuts, which reminds me of a joke i'll post on frivolity friday, and it sounded fine recorded but during my monthly songwriting group session (really, its songwriting, not AA) the guitar dissappeared in a crowd. it sure smelled nice, though and it loved the 13 guage. not for me though. i'll keep looking as i feel gibson makes a fine instrument but for now i'm gibby-less ...... can i stay? John Lee Walker
Hey, cunk, sorry to hear that. I know how depressing it can be when a guitar doesn't live up to your expectations. If you're playing with a group of acoustics and getting lost in the mix I'd suggest a jumbo or SJ 200. You would definitely rise above the noise level with one of those. jefleppard
thanks, jlw. funny you mention the j200. it was what i originally had my sights on but slightly out of my budget. limited local selection also played a part as well as my lack of patience. otoh, i get a thrill from the search so to say the game is on again is actually kind of a rush. i'm going to elderly tomorrow. i think i have a blues king in my sights but who knows - if the salesgirl is cute, i might end up with a takamine and a broken heart. (lyric alert) anyone want to come? or should i just take orders?
ajsc
What John Lee said. imho try an AJ!! I had the same experience with a SWD. I took mine back after a week.
ajsc
Hey, that AJ-500M ought to work!! Might be the loudest guitar I've got!! I put 13's on mine & now it really gets the job done.

(insert confessional or televangelist emoticon here) i have a lust though. one that is only quelled by throwing money at it. GAS is what i'm talkin' bout. LOL! i'm a ranch dog in search of a herd. ajsc
I love mine too. Still can't believe this guitar can be had for such a small price. I've got an AJ short scale RW, & an SJ-200. My Short scale is almost as loud as my SJ-200. I've played regular AJ's that are as loud, with that RW tone that's to die for. If Elderly has one try it. They can't be beat. A good price too, compared to, say, an HD-
ajsc
cunk, you might like this 1. http://elderly.com/vintage/names/gibson-sj-100-(1939-40)--20U-11779.htm Don't know why the link doesn't work. ksdaddy
So how about a J100? Seems like they can be had on ebay for around $1300.
Rambler
If you are looking for ability to cut through, Id have a Bk or J45 on my short list. Hog-Sitka has some real bite to it. re J200 suggestion, might look at a J185, a more manageable package, unless you are built like Jindar.

onewilyfool
Hey Cunk, can you bring guitars into Canada from Detroit without paying duty? I worked a summer in Leamington on a tomato farm in my youth, getting into Windsor many times.....my condolences for the cold Canadian winter you are about to experience....lol
Wayne
So how about a J100? Seems like they can be had on ebay for around $1300. Or less. People are asking that but dont seem to be getting it lately. A 150 just went for 1400. I recently got a J100 Xtra for 1100. I haven't stopped smiling since it got here. My first Gibby. (PS-I'm still trying to decode "swd")

(PS-I'm still trying to decode "swd") wayne- songwriter deluxe. thanks ksd for the j100 hint. i'll check one out at elderly if they have one. do they come in burst or are they only available in the stripped down look? OWF - duty is a unfortunate reality here. you can bring something through, not declare it and take a chance at getting waved through. i know a lot of the border guards - most of them used to be security guards at the casino/hotel/resort i work at. if you do get pulled over and found with undeclared goods, depending on what it is, you'll get charged the duty and your car will be flagged for pull-over inspection everytime you come through. then penalties start to set in after the first offense, up to and including fines and car impound. of course, if its illegal goods, you're done right away. cool to hear the leamington connection. the big tomato is still kickin' and yes, winter is about to kick in as well. 58LG2
too bad about the import duties. I was visiting Detroit from Phoenix a couple weeks ago. There is a super fine J-45 RW Natural Finish, at a place called LimeLight Music in Auburn Hills. Not too far from Windsor, correct? I think you could get it for $1750 USD. It was sweet. 58LG2
Limelight also had a Southern Jumbo that was nice but not quite as nice at the J-45 imho, but to each his own. Both seemed like they would price to move if asked. Also if you go, be sure to ask for what they have in the back. I know they had a 1940ish LG-3, but it just came in so I did not get a chance to play it.

Yes indeed, Mr newhaven, you're blissfully 'wet behind the ears'. :-) The Canada Customs people -- especially since the Canuckbuck achieved parity and near-parity with the US$ -- can/do require Canadians who return from visits to the US to "prove" to them that items which they consider to be "expensive"were actually not purchased in the US. Guitars included. It's kind of draconian, and a lot of Canadians resent this sort-of "Guilty till proven innocent" approach and view it as high-handed. But there it is, eh?
