Picked up my new Dot Deluxe Flame Top today, beautiful piece of equipment, but I don't know much about the history of "Deluxe Flame Tops". Can anybody fill me in as to the specifics?

What do you need to know? It's a Dot 335 with gold hardware and a flame maple veneer top. Maple body; necks are usually maple, but mahogany is possible.

These are all sharp looking tops! That Bigsby looks great Snowbum! Hard to see with the angle and glare, but did you use a Vibramate?

Yes I did use a vibramate. I had a few comments about it not being a B7 but I like it. I also installed a Wilkinson roller bridge, so I have not tuning issues.

Hey - I did the same Bigsby w/adapter thing too. It works pretty good. I also installed a pair of Duncan Alnico II's with p/p coil cuts. Also, the guitar sounds best to me with flatwounds on the bass strings. I think that because the Bigsby setup seemed to brighten the guitar a bit. So the flats tone it down some. Great sounding, versatile guitar.

How do you like the Alnico II's? I'm not realy fond of the GFS '59 pups in mine and am looking to try something different. I just put a set of Pearly Gates in my Les Paul and I don't want the Dot to sound the same as my LP. Oh, I have a casino so I thought I would keep trying humbuckers and not do a P-90 since I have that covered.

Try a pair of Seymour Duncan Seth's, the most authentic PAF made today. Rich, open, airy tones.

I love the Alnico II's. I had pulled them out of a ESP Xtone to try something different in it. So I had them in a box just waiting for an application. My DOT with those pu's just nail the classic 335 tone - I think. I have a '78 Ibanez Artist 2630 (with a early 70's Gibson neck pu and a Gibson 490T (I believe) to compare to. And many believe, including me, that the early Ibanez's were as good or better than Gibson's of the same era.

Also, I love GFS pu's as well. I have a GFS 59 and Fat PAT combo in a USA double HB Strat. They work great in it. In my experience with the GFS line, the Classic II Alnico 2 might be the best choice if you want to save some $ over the Duncan's. I had a pair in a full hollow Artcore. The dam thing came surprisingly close to the tones of my early 70's ES-175T.
