By the way, Pete was pretty good rhythm player and has cracked the top whatever guitarest of all time in my book. [thumbup]

Townshend was lead, rhythm, composer, and everything else. If you think of him solely as a rhythm player, you haven't listened to enough Who. His guitar playing is highly under recognized in my book.

Townshend has gone on record (no pun intended) as saying he considered John Entwhistle to be the 'lead guitarist' of The Who........

Seriously.

The only guy I've heard of who claims to just play lead is BB. He said "I don't play chords."

Pete Townshend........Everytime I've seen him live, he's a better guitarist.......His leads are hidden within his playing...........

As such, he is actually an astounding lead guitarist........Study "Won't Get Fooled Again"....It's almost all lead guitar playing...........
Many guitars, including; Gibson, Fender, Warwick, Epiphone, ESP, Ibanez, Hamer, Peavey, M.K., Dean, Xavior. Trumpet, violin, viola, keyboards, harmonicas, various effect units, Egnater, Peavey, Vox and other tube amps, various other amps and cabinets, Recording Studio based around a Korg D3200, lots of errors and mistakes, no regrets.
I use Atlas Stands because they are the best................. http://www.facebook.com/atlasstands ......American Made.......Sheptones; MIA and the Best.......

Joe Walsh (think James Gang). While his leads were good, his rhythm was the backbone of the band's sound.

Back to Pete Townsend, I've always considered him the greatest rhythm guitarist of all time. He perfected "rhythm as lead", in addition to playing some traditional "lead" guitar.
Regards, T Bone.

In Clapton's biography written by himself. he is quoted as saying "John Lennon was the best rhythm guitar player of his time".

Just saying.

Tom Petty, in the Documentary "Wired for Sound" (I think that was the name of it), in the interview spoke about being a rhythm guitar player...

Another rhythm guitarist... Ray Davies from the Kinks... (Dave was lead)..

There are guys like Paul Stanley, James Hetfield, Scott Ian, Pat Thrall (of the original Pat Travers Band), Stone Gossard. The guys in Thin Lizzy swapped. As did other bands with two lead guitar players, like Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. I would say that two of my biggest heroes, Ace Frehley, and especially Alex Lifeson, excel at both. Andy Summers is another.
"Let me tell you my story....I got a man-size predicament, and it's a big one...and it goes like this...yeah..."

Take a Gibson Les Paul, throw a DiMarzio Super Distortion in it, plug it into a Marshall amp and turn it up to 10. It's pretty much a no brainer!- Ace ****in' Frehley
I don't see why we have to go through all the bullshit of high school just to be musicians- Alex Lifeson
It doesn't matter how fast you can play or how many chords you know, if you can't play the blues, go the **** home you ain't worth nothin'- Richie Scarlet
Critics love Elvis Costello because they all look like him- David Lee Roth

Ace is God- Dimebag Darrell (RIP. 1966-2004)
Like is too strong a word...I don't really like anybody- Chris DeNicola (I love Road Rants)
You can keep the drugs, I'll take the sex and the rock n' roll- Paul Stanley
Thanks..I like to play...- Garth Algar (AKA Dana Carvey)

And most importantly....**** OFF ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME! (Gene Simmons, Eddie Trunk, and anyone who matters)

Well, I notice we've yet to mention Brad Whitford of Aerosmith. As to rhythm guitarists who really are rhythm guitarists, he's a pretty damned good one too.

Eddie Van Halen is a masterful rhythm player who's often overlooked in that regard.

I was just about to add Paul Stanley. In concert instead of playing a lead solo spot he starts one and it's not very good (on purpose
).Then he goes on to play a killer spot of rhythm and he is amazing.
I've always really liked Stephen Stills Rhythm playing he is amazing.Anybody who can play Suite Judy Blue Eyesalone on an acoustic with Nash and Crosby just singing is wicked talented.
