It'd be mainly for recording acoustic but would also be recording (male)vocals I use an ISA One Digital Pre. Here are some of the mics I've been looking at. I'd like some help in narrowing them down (of course, if there are some mics which I have overlooked please let me know) AKG C451 - £240 Shure SM 7 B - £280 Audio Technica AT4040 - £350 Audio Technica AT4047/SV/SC - £439 Neumann KM184 - £500 Audio Technica AT4050 SM - £510 Audio Technica AT4047 MP - £629 Audio Technica AT4047/SV/SM - £629 Shure KSM44A - £663 AKG C414 XLS - £670 AKG C414 XLII - £687 I'd prefer not to spend over £600 but will if it is worth it (tho I won't go over the C414 XLII price listed). Current mics I own: Shure c606 Beringher C-3 Se1A Thanks I've got an AT 4047sv, it was a brand new mic when I got it back in the 1990's. It's a great mic but I get great results from my Studio Project's C1 too and it was less than half the cost so I keep the AT 4047sv safely in it's case and use the C1 for micing my guitar/amp and vocal recording as well. I've heard mixed revues about the newer AKG 414's and I would stay away from the cheaper AT and Shure stuff although it's really hard to beat a SM 57 (for what you pay) in a good room with proper placement. L5Larry Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 For mic'ing acoustic instruments I use the Shure SM-81 condenser mic. Requires outboard phantom power. It also has three "selectable" frequency roll-off settings built in, which make it very versatile for various instruments and usages. If you have "phantom" power available, a condenser mic will always sound better than a dynamic mic for low volume acoustic instruments. Some brands/models even have battery operation capability. rlan52 Posted July 25, 2012 Share Posted July 25, 2012 I just bought a Neumann TLM 102 at Sam Ash for $699. It has turned out to be the best investment in Mic's that I have made. My acoustic guitars have never sounded better. Vocals are really high end even in my home studio. I am currently using it with a Golden Age Pre 73 and I love it. Previously, I had been using an AKG "Solid Tube" with the upgraded tube and the capsule modification. That did yield good results but never seemed to play well with the Golden Age Pre 73. I usually ended up using it with my Mbox Pro Firewire mic pre's. I highly recommend the Neumann TLM 102 for acoustic guitar and vocals. It is a small microphone but packs a big punch...
