EpiNova95 Posted August 30, 2012 Share Posted August 30, 2012 The original ones used leftover fretboard materials from the recently discontinued Gothic SG...ebony with moon crescent inlays (standard placement, rather than just on the 12th fret like the Gothics). They ran out of inlays then offered ebony board with dot inlays before switching to rosewood with dots. Now its baked maple with dots. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've never seen a Special with a baked maple fretboard. Interesting...Gibson.com has baked maple listed under the specs, and that's what I've seen at Guitar Center recently. Searcy Posted September 8, 2012 Share Posted September 8, 2012 The early versions also featured point to point working in the control cavity where as the newer ones have printer circuit boards.
