iona
Can anyone tell me what size the hole is for the tuners? I need to replace the tuners with vintage style grover. What would be a direct replacement? The J50 is from the mid seventy. I hope that someone can help me with this. Thank You.

You need to remove a tuner and measure the diameter of the hole (inside the bushing) with a digital caliper. You may also want to remove the bushing to measure the actual diameter of the hole through the wood. Then go on a website such as stewmac.com that sells vintage-style tuners to check their dimensions. Adapter bushings are available to accommodate different size headstock holes and tuner stringpost diameters. It isn't possible to say with certainty what your guitar has now, as tuners get changed fairly often.
zombywoof
To follow up on J45nick go to something like the Stewmac site. They provide specs for tuners plus conversion bushings. I am not positive but I believe that Kluson Keystones were what you found on 1970s Gibsons.
