2013 Gibson SG Standards

The tenon on the short joint extends under the neck pickup so it is almost as strong as the later era long joint. I don't see people posting on the forums about bad experiences with their 61' reissue's and many people have them so I think you're safe. My 2010 Epi G400 has the short joint and it seems very sturdy strung with 10-46's. Not much noticeable difference from my 2012 Gibson Sg Standard that has the long joint except even better upper fret access.

Could someone please help me:

What is the real difference now between the SG Standard 2013 and the 61 Reissue Satin except the fingerboard

(rosewood vs. baked maple)and the finish?

So finally I have to pay the same price for baked maple fingerboard with a thinner nitrocellulose lacquer as

for the rosewood fingerboard and a glossier nitrocellulose finish...

Is that right?

Thanks for your help...

Are they discontinuing the SG Standard?

The 2013 Standard will be like the current '61 SG Reissue.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SG13HCCH-13/

Smaller pickguard, slim 60s neck, two 57 humbuckers.

I do not have any flexing on my slim neck.

Very solid guitar, and so light weight.

For right now, it looks identical and the same specs as my 2012 Reissue I got in May.

So, does this mean that the '61 Reissue is being discontinued? If not, what are the differences, if any, between the 2013 Standard and the '61 RE? Longer tenon, better woods, anything?

Right now I have a brand new 2012 '61 RE that is very returnable...I'm thinking of sending it back and replacing it with a 2013 Standard.

I'm gonna buy one regardless, but what are people's experiences with neck flexing on '61 Re Issues (looks as if that's what the new model is based on) anybody's thoughts?

hi!

just my 2 cents: both on my 2008 Epi G400 and my 2010 SG Standard, there is no flex despite my preference for 012 strings in standard tuning ...

Curses... I wish I'd read this before buying a 2012 Std. I would have preferred a thinner neck and 57's and I like the aesthetics of the smaller guard better... oh well. I do really like the one I got so I won't be in a hurry to get rid of or replace it.

Your 2010 SG Standard has a fat neck though, right? I too am curious about the neck as I watched a video with Jerry Cantrell and his Custom Shop SG, which has a slim neck. He says it's hard to keep in tune. I use 11s on my Les Paul tuned to Eb so I hope there are no issues. I'm ordering a 2013 SG Standard today so I can comment more on it when I get her and take her for a dance. I'm gonna put some Grover lockers on her too, so maybe that will help with tuning stability. I'll be sure to post pics and a review after I play her a little.

SO GLAD to see this return to the deeper beveling inside the horns (especially at the lower bout),

AND the tapering of the horns, again! The smaller headstock, is obviously a nod to the "Standard"

moniker, but all else seems to be '61 in appearance. Thumbs WAY UP, Gibson! Now, will Gibson offer

a Maestro tremolo version, as well? I hope so...

Cheers,

CB

Not with the Standard but with the SG "Original" they have the lyre. Think I'll just add one to my 2010, not worth paying 600 bucks over the standard for it...

Thanks, Jeff...I've seen those, and they're NICE! Was just hoping they'd offer Maestro, as an option,

for the new Standards, as well. But, if there's a will, there's always a way, to add one. So... [tongue]

Also...what I'M hoping Gibson will do, is continue that '60's (better) beveling/horn tapering trend,

down the line of other SG's, as well, without having to go to the "Custom Shop" price range. That

would be Great!! [thumbup][biggrin]

Amen, CB! I'm digging the "SG Original" (FINALLY!), and if they are consistent with the tapered tips and beveling of the horns, along with the finish (MOST of the 2012 '61 RI's I ran across had a MUCH improved, more accurate RED color than some of the last decade's "washed out", orangey/brownish looking "cherry"). Honestly, if the SG Original had an ABR instead of the Nashville bridge, it'd be MORE "historically accurate" than the Custom Shop/Historic models. HOWEVER, if they still want to tweak the Historics with tapered horns and a little more symmetry I'd still buy one. I'm DEFINITELY picking up an "Original" within the next few weeks, and I don't mind paying the upcharge between it and the "new Standard", because it's still as cheap as (or a little cheaper than) its '61 Reissue predecessors for a MUCH improved guitar. I give Gibson much kudos for finally at least giving us this USA/non-CS alternative again. I love it. :)

  • 3 months later...

Yesterday on Facebook someone posted a beautiful pic of a new SG with the classic 60s cherry finish that was not only popular but really brought out the beauty of the guitar. The guitar had 3 'buckers and a Bigsby,I hope that the Easter Bunny brings me one.
